Senior Engineer - Civil/Maritime
Lead the Future of Maritime Infrastructure
Are you a Civil Engineer looking for a new challenge? At Tetra Tech RPS, we're looking for experienced engineers to join our maritime team delivering civil and structural engineering solutions in the ports and harbours sector in Belfast (with flexibility to consider other locations for the right candidate).
This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of maritime infrastructure projects-from ports and harbours to coastal defences and marine terminals. We deliver innovative solutions to clients diverse needs with many flagship projects including Loch Ryan Port, Cork Container Terminal and Dinish Wharf Expansion. Whether you're actively seeking your next challenge or open to exploring new possibilities, this role offers the chance to lead technical delivery and shape the future of coastal infrastructure.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
As a senior technical expert, you will play a pivotal role in supporting maritime team leaders in the delivery of high-quality design services to clients across the ports and maritime sectors. Your contribution will extend beyond technical delivery, as you'll also mentor junior engineers and actively support the growth of the team's technical capabilities. The scope of your involvement will include the full lifecycle of civil and maritime infrastructure design-from concept development through to preliminary and detailed design. You'll also take responsibility for project management and contract administration, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently and to a high standard. In addition, you'll engage directly with clients through technical reporting and consultation, while contributing to business development and team mentoring initiatives.
Reporting to the Director of Ports and Maritime, you'll be part of a passionate and collaborative team delivering innovative solutions across the UK and Ireland. This role offers excellent opportunities for progression and leadership within a growing and strategically important sector.
Your Impact in this Position
You'll play a key role in delivering technical excellence, supporting junior engineers, and managing client relationships. You'll be independently managing small to medium-sized projects, leading design teams, and contributing to business development.
Success in this role is measured through technical leadership, collaboration, and project delivery. With clear pathways for growth and the chance to make a meaningful impact, this is a role where your development and achievements are actively supported.
Your Toolkit for Success at Tetra Tech RPS
At Tetra Tech RPS we recruit using core capabilities-the essential skills, experience, and responsibilities required to perform the role effectively.
But we'll let you in on a secret: there's no such thing as the 'perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.
Technical Competence
This role demands a strong foundation in civil and structural engineering principles, with the ability to apply these across a diverse range of maritime infrastructure projects. You'll be expected to demonstrate proficiency in industry-standard design software and have experience working to Eurocodes, ensuring compliance and technical accuracy in all aspects of design. Familiarity with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools and Microsoft Office is essential for producing high-quality documentation and drawings. While direct experience in maritime engineering is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite-what matters most is your ability to adapt and apply core engineering principles to complex, real-world challenges. The ideal candidate will be technically confident, detail-oriented, and capable of contributing to innovative solutions within a collaborative team environment.
Problem Solving & Quality Assurance
In this role, a strong emphasis is placed on your ability to approach complex technical challenges with confidence and clarity. You'll be expected to analyse engineering problems across a range of maritime and civil infrastructure contexts, applying sound judgement and practical experience to develop effective solutions. Independent thinking is key-you'll often be trusted to take initiative, make informed decisions, and manage tasks without close supervision. Alongside problem-solving, you'll contribute to quality assurance processes, ensuring that all deliverables meet rigorous technical standards and align with client expectations. Your attention to detail and commitment to excellence will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and reliability of our engineering outputs.
Team Leadership & Mentoring
Effective team leadership and mentoring are central to this role. You'll be expected to work collaboratively within a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, contributing not only to technical delivery but also to the development of others. As a senior member of the team, you'll play a key role in guiding junior engineers-sharing knowledge, offering constructive feedback, and helping them navigate complex engineering challenges. Your ability to foster a supportive and inclusive team culture will be essential in maintaining high standards of performance and engagement. By mentoring others, you'll help build technical capability across the team, ensuring that emerging talent is nurtured and that project outcomes benefit from a diversity of perspectives and experience.
Client Engagement & Communication
Strong client engagement and effective communication are essential components of this role. You'll be expected to build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, acting as a key point of contact throughout the lifecycle of a project. This involves confidently presenting technical information in a clear and accessible manner, whether through written reports, design documentation, or face-to-face meetings. Your interpersonal skills will be vital in understanding client needs, managing expectations, and ensuring that solutions are aligned with project goals. By fostering open dialogue and demonstrating technical credibility, you'll help strengthen client partnerships and contribute to the long-term success of our maritime engineering services.
MANDATORY Training & Qualification Requirements
* MEng or BEng in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)

BENEFICIAL Training, Qualifications, or Equivalent Work Experience
* Chartered or near-chartered status
* Experience in maritime or civil infrastructure projects
* Familiarity with BIM processes and 3D modelling tools
