Registrar in Care of the Elderly

The closing date is 16 April 2026

An exciting opportunity to join the Care of the Elderly team at Weston General Hospital. The successful applicant will work with the Care of the Elderly team and be predominantly responsible for providing care for patients on Care of the Elderly wards, including opportunities to work on the Older Persons Assessment Unit, Kewstoke ward (acute medicine for the older person), Uphill ward (acute medicine for the older person ward and stroke rehabilitation) and Draycott ward (complex discharge). The successful candidate will also be supporting the Care of the Elderly clinics including movement disorders, TIA, Frailty SDEC and Rapid Access Care of the Older Person (RACOP).


Main duties of the job

The Care of the Elderly post is detailed below and could be available to start as early as May 2026, however we understand that a notice period may need to be given in a candidate's current role. A shadow period will be provided for on-calls, and solo on-calls wouldn't begin until July / August 2026.

Core: The post holder will be responsible for the continuity of patient care for patients being treated on Care of the Elderly wards including opportunities to work on the Older Persons Assessment Unit, Kewstoke ward (acute medicine for the older person), Uphill ward (acute medicine for the older person ward and stroke rehabilitation) and Draycott ward (complex discharge). The successful candidate will also be supporting the Care of the Elderly clinics including movement disorders (including Parkinson's Disease), TIA, Frailty SDEC and Rapid Access Care of the Older Person (RACOP).

The general medical component of the position involves inclusion on a full shift rota with the Specialty Registrars. This is currently run over a 16-week period and includes long days, on-call, nights, twilights and weekend discharge shifts.

Qualifications and Training

* Full registration and a license to practice with GMC.
* Minimum of 5 years full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time basis) and at least 2 years paid NHS experience.
* Completion of IMT3 or equivalent.
* MB ChB or equivalent.
* Special interest in a subspecialty in Medicine for the Older Person.
* Skills lab competent to: temporary pace externally, access circulation for resuscitation e.g. femoral or IO, intercostal drain insertion of a pneumothorax and effusion and abdominal paracentesis.
* Competent to perform unsupervised: Nasogastric tube insertion, lumbar puncture, ascitic tap, pleural aspiration, DC cardioversion and lead a cardiorespiratory arrest.
* Teaching qualification Experience.


Experience

* Minimum of five years full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time basis) in experience in Medicine for the Older Person.
* Knowledge of the role of clinical governance in current clinical practice.
* SCE in Geriatric Medicine.
* Diploma in Geriatric Medicine.
* Member of the British Geriatric Society.
* SIM teaching experience.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates and Allied Health Professionals.


Clinical Knowledge and Skills

* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to Medicine for the Older Person.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Proven ability to organise and prioritise workload.
* Broad range of IT skills.
* Demonstrate current ALS certification or equivalent.
* Management and leadership course.


Clinical Governance and Audit

* Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
* An understanding of and a proven ability to apply research findings to individual patients or populations of patients.
* Experience in quality improvement work.
* Demonstrate experience as lead for clinical quality improvement project.


Research

* Demonstrate experience as lead for clinical governance Research & Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
* Evidence of involvement in research.
* Interest in clinical research and an ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.


Behaviors and Values

* Be able to demonstrate a commitment to the four Trust values.
* Reflect Trust values through examples in clinical practice.
* Demonstrate effective team work.
