Job ref 284-26-7947231-DMUT. Site: Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Town Birmingham. Contract: Permanent, Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week. Salary: £32,073 – £39,043 per annum. Closing date: 02/06/2026 23:59.


Job Overview

The Microbiology team at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the department. The post holder will receive HCPC registration support and work in a 7‑day service covering bacteriology, virology and serology. Flexibility across these areas and participation in a 24‑hour rota are expected.


Main duties and responsibilities

* Develop and update specialist theoretical, practical and IT knowledge, maintain essential competencies, and participate in continual professional development.
* Participate in internal and external quality control activities, correct minor non‑conformities, and report major non‑compliance events.
* Work within HSE and departmental health‑safety regulations, hazard and risk assessments, and COSHH evaluations before all procedures.
* Utilise ICT daily to accurately input test requests, authorise and issue laboratory reports.
* Follow SOPs and policies to ensure high‑quality data, maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases, and recognise data quality problems.
* Support microscope analysis and the operation of complex automated and non‑automated equipment with excellent hand‑eye coordination.
* Handle body tissues, fluids (including CSF, blood, faeces, sputum) and hazardous chemicals, providing a safe working environment.


Qualifications

* BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
* HCPC registration (or willingness to achieve registration).


Knowledge

* HCPC registration.


Skills

* Familiarity with common IT systems such as Microsoft Office.
* Familiarity with laboratory IT systems.
