About The Role
Balfour Beatty are looking for a Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Manager to join our Highways team on the Lower Thames Crossing project.
The Lower Thames Crossing will create a new connection under the River Thames to increase capacity and ease congestion in the South of England. Balfour Beatty is responsible for the design and delivery of over 10 miles of new highways, connecting the M25 at Junction 29 and the A13 with the Lower Thames Crossing tunnel at Tilbury, Essex.
The HSW Manager will support the Project Director, Head of HSW and Project Senior Teams to deliver Zero Harm. They will drive performance of the relevant HSW teams ensuring efficient and effective service and support levels to meet and where possible exceed operational requirements.
What you'll be doing
* Manage day to day Health, Safety & Wellbeing resources to support Operations implement the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Policy and standards across the project in their area of responsibility.
* Manage the resource allocation and deployment of competent HSW delivery resource across their area of responsibility, ensuring resource utilisation data is collected and made available to implement a risk-based support schedule.
* Support work winning and bid support for the operational teams, where required.
* Manage the programme of inspection and audit to provide assurance that all the project continues to comply with company requirements.
* Fulfil HSW, Customer and Balfour Beatty incident reporting and performance requirements (7 Day Report, KPIs,) and act as incident lead if required.
* In collaboration with Project Director/Head of Operations Directors, carry out project and business sector HSW performance reviews using lagging and leading indicators.
* Support the Operations/Project Director with contract/project level SHELTs to drive and deliver HSW improvement plans.
* Maintain up to date knowledge of developments in Health and Safety.
* Lead, develop and coach individuals to build high performing teams and create a pipeline of talent, sharing learnings and contributing to continuous improvement.
* Develop professional relationships with customers and specifically their HSW professionals.
* Ensure key stakeholders are aligned on priorities and details of the HSW Strategy and Plans.
* To develop and deliver suitable HSW training programmes for all project personnel (including routine contract inductions) in line with budget.
* To provide support and management of external audits and liaise to assist in the provision of corrective actions and closeout of audit findings
* To manage the team in identifying the HSW competencies/certification required for staff and ensure these are delivered and maintained. Ensure that appropriate and auditable records are kept and maintained, monitor such records through audit and inspections
* To lead on the reviewing and advising on Method Statements and Risk Assessments both internally and from the Supply Chain
* Manage/drive internal and External working groups
* Deputise for the Head of HSW where required
* Produce material and organise HSW standdown and workshops as required
Who we're looking for
The Following Qualities/experience Are Essential
* Certified Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (or working towards)
* NVQ Level 4/5 (or equivalent qualification/experience).
* NEBOSH Construction Certificate / Diploma.
* Must have detailed, technical knowledge and experience health and safety legislation, regulations and guidance.
* Construction industry experience (or experience in an equivalent sector) and in particular CDM, previous experience of Highway and Structures construction desirable
* Must have prior experience of providing leadership and support to operational and functional teams
