An exciting opportunity has opened up for a skilled Legal and Compliance Officer to join a respected investment-focused firm, where integrity and innovation are at the heart of operations. This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in commercial and regulatory law, who thrives in dynamic environments and wants to make a meaningful impact across legal and compliance functions.
The successful candidate will report to the Head of Legal and Regulatory Compliance and play a pivotal role in safeguarding the business by offering expert legal advice, driving regulatory compliance, and supporting complex financial transactions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide legal advice and opinion work across all business units and affiliates
2. Draft, vet, and negotiate a range of contracts including investment management agreements, loan agreements, ISDAs, and NDAs
3. Conduct legal research and liaise with external legal advisors where necessary
4. Monitor and interpret regulatory changes affecting the business
5. Implement internal controls, policies, and compliance tracking tools
6. Draft and maintain compliance frameworks including CRMPs, trackers, and training materials
7. Manage regulatory reporting and ensure alignment with relevant financial legislation
8. Support financial product structuring and provide technical legal input in product development
9. Handle regulatory filings and oversee license maintenance across jurisdictions
10. Assist with internal and external FICA/KYC documentation and requests
Key Requirements:
11. Bachelor’s degree in Law, BCom Law or relevant compliance qualifications (CPrac (SA) is advantageous)
12. 4–8 years’ experience in financial services legal and/or compliance roles, particularly in investment environments
13. Proficient in contract drafting and commercial legal advisory work
14. Strong working knowledge of financial legislation including FAIS, FICA, CISCA, Pension Funds Act, POPIA, and related regulatory frameworks
15. Demonstrable experience in executing and supporting complex loan transactions (LMA templates advantageous)
16. Knowledge of financial products, capital markets, and documentation such as GMRAs, ISDAs, and securities lending agreements
17. Highly organised with strong communication, research, and analytical skills
18. Proactive mindset, ability to work independently and collaboratively
19. High standards of professionalism, accountability, and business acumen
