Overview

Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, A+E Paediatric (1 YEAR) role at Tabasco Event. The post involves leading clinical and operational aspects of the Emergency Department in paediatrics, with 24 hour responsibility for daily operational management and service delivery processes in the department.


Responsibilities

* Work a combination of clinical and non-clinical shifts, holding 24 hour responsibility for the daily operational management and service delivery processes in the department. This includes line management of staff, managing and monitoring resources within the defined budget and contributing to the corporate agenda.
* Act as the clinical lead within the Emergency Department and provide direct clinical leadership by working on rostered shifts.
* Work collaboratively with the ward manager for Ash Ward to facilitate the smooth patient flow from paediatric ED through to the ward.
* Lead and promote a quality service using research and evidence based practice including the setting and monitoring of clinical standards whilst achieving national standards including the 4 hour ED target.
* To be clinically able to undertake and direct high quality research based clinical nursing care, sharing expertise with the nursing team.
* Develop and maintain own competence in agreed basic and advanced clinical skills; demonstrate clinical knowledge/expertise at the level of advanced practice in field relevant to clinical speciality.
* Manage clinical situations that may be challenging and distressing for junior staff, ensuring the needs of the child and family are paramount.
* Ensure effective patient flow through the department, ensuring pathways and processes are in place for safe discharge, transfer or admission; regularly check patient care documentation to ensure appropriate plans are made for identified needs.
* Act as a role model in the clinical setting, advising and supporting members of the multidisciplinary team; facilitate professional development of other nurses and mentor junior colleagues.
* Work with infection control to monitor the ward environment and raise infection control and cleanliness standards; ensure clinical governance processes at department level meet quality standards.
* Support the patient pathway from Paediatric ED to discharge, admission or transfer; allocate tasks with appropriate skill mix and patient acuity; promote staff wellbeing and ensure breaks are managed to maintain clinical safety.
* Provide leadership, delegate appropriately, empower staff to problem solve, and promote collaboration with all MDT members.
* Contribute to recruitment, retention, and deployment of nursing staff and resources; manage duty rotas and negotiate skill mix to meet service needs; address disciplinary or capability issues with the Paediatric ED Matron as needed.
* Engage in service development, quality improvement, and ongoing problem resolution with the Paediatric ED Matron and Head of Nursing for paediatrics; undertake annual appraisal for nursing staff and support change management.
* Ensure environment compliance with Health and Safety, infection control and COSHH; promote excellent communication within the department and with the multidisciplinary team; address patient concerns proactively to prevent complaints.
* Ensure the safe custody and administration of drugs in line with local and Trust policies; handle and dispose of body fluids per universal precautions; maintain electronic rotable and patient records to their full potential.
* Oversee education and training, promote competency via work-based education, and collaborate with the Clinical Practice Educator on training needs and evaluation; participate in clinical benchmarking and ensure all new staff receive appropriate orientation and induction.


Qualifications and Professional Development

* Maintain and develop professional knowledge to meet revalidation and job requirements; actively share knowledge and contribute to the Trust as a clinical leader.
* Delegate appropriate responsibilities to enhance others’ practice and engage in reflective practice and ongoing professional development.
* Adhere to NMC Code of Professional Conduct and contribute to Trust projects, committees, and meetings as agreed; participate in annual appraisal with agreed objectives.
* Foster an environment conducive to learning, enquiry, and research aligned with the Trust’s research strategy.
* Ensure safeguarding policies and processes are understood and adhered to by staff; promote safeguarding awareness across the ward.


Health, Safety & Security

* Maintain a clean and safe environment; be accountable for own competence in practice; promote evidence-based nursing practice in line with Trust policies.
* Identify risks to staff, patients and visitors; take action and follow incident reporting procedures; ensure safe custody and administration of medicines; manage waste and body fluids per universal precautions.


Information Processing & Care Provision

* Ensure E-rota and electronic patient records are used to their full potential; collect/record data accurately in accordance with guidelines and Core Standards.
* Supervise staff in delivery of care; implement Named Nurse initiatives; advocate for patients and coordinate with support services when needed; coordinate timely transfers and discharges.


General Responsibilities

* General duty of care for own health, safety, wellbeing, colleagues, visitors and patients; observe department rules, policies and professional obligations; be prepared to perform other duties within the scope of the role.
