Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist The closing date is 23 June 2026.
Main duties of the job The post holder will work closely with ward managers, the wider MDT, and relevant community teams to provide a safe and effective service and maintain an effective care pathway for older adults with dementia.
They will serve as the Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients on Tower Ward under the Mental Health Act, ensuring timely, knowledgeable care while applying the Mental Capacity Act appropriately.
Key responsibilities include:
Clinical assessment, diagnosis, and utilization of a bio‑psychosocial approach to treatment.
Evidence‑based interventions and adherence to legal and boundary considerations.
Active engagement in clinical leadership: enabling and encouraging team members, strategic planning, team morale, and availability to the team.
Attendance at regular reviews, providing supervision of junior and middle grade doctors, and participation in teaching programmes.
Participation in clinical governance, audit data collection, and management of day‑to‑day service development.
Provision of consistent responses to referrers, accurate diagnosis, and timely interventions within the recovery model.
Attendance of Mental Health Act assessments, acting as Responsible Clinician for inpatients, and attendance at Tribunals when necessary.
Cooperation with consultant colleagues for smooth patient journey, liaison with GPs, psychiatrists, and other specialists, and commitment to a multidisciplinary approach.
Participation in on‑call Consultant rota as a 3rd Tier Consultant, and appointment of clinical cover for daytime hours.
Participation in Trust‑wide committees and management forums, annual appraisal, CPD compliance, and job planning with the Clinical Director.
Qualifications
MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register, or within six months of obtaining.
Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant.
Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status.
Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
On the Specialist Register with qualifications in Older Adult Psychiatry.
Postgraduate degree in psychiatry MRC Psych or equivalent.
Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
In good standing with GMC regarding warnings and conditions on practice.
Clinical skills, knowledge and experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
Evidence‑based decision making, incorporating contributions from others.
Ability to meet duties under Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Transport
Holds and will use a valid UK driving licence, or provides evidence of alternative.
