The Role:
Hampshire Library Service is transforming to meet the evolving needs of our communities. With 40 sites welcoming over 4.8 million visitors annually, our libraries are becoming vibrant community hubs that support learning, wellbeing, and connection. We’re looking for a strategic and people-focused Area Manager to lead the library & community hubs in the West Hampshire area, covering the New Forest and Test Valley districts.
This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to shape service delivery across a diverse portfolio of libraries, including Lymington, Andover, Totton, Romsey and more. You’ll lead a large, multi-disciplinary team, drive innovation, and work closely with internal and external partners to deliver inclusive, high-impact services that make a real difference.
What you’ll do:
* Lead and manage library teams across multiple sites, ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery.
* Translate strategic aims into local delivery, driving improvement and transformation.
* Oversee operational performance, budgets, and resource planning.
* Build strong partnerships with internal services and external organisations.
* Lead county-wide projects and take on specialist areas to support strategic goals.
* Promote collaborative working and represent the service with confidence and clarity.
What we’re looking for:
* Proven leadership experience across multiple teams and service areas.
* Background in customer-focused environments (library experience desirable but not essential).
* Strategic mindset with the ability to drive change and deliver transformation.
* A proactive and dynamic leader with the drive to innovate, challenge existing practices, and lead beyond direct responsibilities to deliver strategic impact.
* Commercial awareness and confidence in managing budgets and resources.
* Excellent communication, organisational, and decision-making skills.
