Wye Valley NHS Trust have an exciting opportunity for registered nurses who are interested in becoming a Specialist Community and Public Health Nurse - School Nurse with a view to starting a 12 month training programme in February 2026. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys working with children and families and are passionate about their health and wellbeing.

The School Nursing service provides and excellent learning environment facilitated by Community Practice Teachers, Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors. These staff will guide and support you on your learning journey to becoming a School Nurse through the University of Wolverhampton. You will be paid throughout your training and upon successful completion will become a School Nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

This is a community based role with duties being carried out in homes, community setting and schools.

The Specialist Community and Public Health Nursing post is funded for 12 months and we will be working with Birmingham City University, the post will be commencing in February 2026 and is 50% in practice and 50% theory. The requirements for the course are that:

* You are first level registered nurse or midwife with the NMC
* For Level 7 study you must have a health-related degree (Nursing or Midwifery)

The post holder must have a full driving license and access to a car for work purposes.


Main duties of the job

* Completion of SCPHN qualification in School Nursing
* Completion of initial health assessment under the guidance of the School Nurse
* Supporting a programme of intervention under the direction of the School Nurse.
* Attendance at drop-in sessions at high schools and supporting the teaching of pupils through assemblies/workshops.
* Contribute to team business meetings and daily allocation

Person Specification


Education & qualifications

* RGN/RSCN registered with the NMC
* Post Graduate Qualification
* Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor training


Skills, knowledge & abilities

* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Possess basic IT skills e.g. able to use Microsoft Word, Excel etc.
* Experience of managing own workload and ability to prioritise work delegated
* Delivery of evidence based practice
* Must have a knowledge of the public health role within School Nursing
* Able to work as part of a team and demonstrate the ability to work in partnership with children, young people and their families as well as professionals
* Able to demonstrate confidentiality in all aspects of their work
* Previous Community Experience
* Knowledge of clinical supervision


Experience

* Must have post-registration experience, minimum of 6 months
* Have an understanding of child protection procedures within the local area.
* Experience of working with children and young people and families
* Able to demonstrate knowledge of the services Key Performance indicators and how they influence service delivery
