Offer description

To be an efficient, flexible member of the Cellular Pathology laboratory providing a high-quality service to Imperial College Healthcare Trust.

To maintain the required levels of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice, as specified in local and national guidelines.

To work with biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the provision of a comprehensive and effective Cellular Pathology service for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as directed by the Head of the Department.

To participate in the efficient handling, processing, and analysis of samples in the laboratory, under supervision.

To maintain effective records of all activities and procedures, and to contribute towards the maintenance of the laboratory's quality system.

To check, keep clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.

To carry out supervised laboratory procedures in all sections of the laboratory, as directed by the Head of the Unit and senior scientific staff.

To undergo appropriate teaching and training as directed and as necessary to maintain HPC registration and to keep suitable records of all training activities undertaken.


Main duties of the job

1. Contribute to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.

2. Be able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Healthcare Scientist.

3. Develop and improve your professional expertise.

4. More experienced Healthcare Scientists will be expected to supervise unqualified staff and deputise for section leaders when necessary.

5. Provide specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit.

Job responsibilities

Main tasks and responsibilities include:


Communication and Relationship Skills

1. Demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity when dealing with patients, visitors, and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.

2. Share good practice within the department and Trust wide.

3. Promote a positive image of the Trust at all times.

4. Work cohesively with all department members to ensure the best services are provided.

5. Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication.

6. Provide and receive complex information, including advice, result explanations, and instructions.

7. Communicate and record any difficulties, problems, accidents, or incidents promptly.


Scientific and Technical Duties

1. Become proficient in diagnostic work within the department and provide comprehensive laboratory services.

2. Work autonomously with decision-making responsibility, referring to senior staff when needed.

3. Organize own work tasks effectively.

4. Complete all work to standards and seek advice when necessary.

5. Maintain safe working practices and internal/external quality assurance.

6. Validate reports using judgmental expertise and authorize reports when responsible.

7. Maintain documentation to Trust standards, including electronic records.

8. Comply with Trust policies and promote awareness.

9. Identify and report risks according to the Trust risk management policy.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a biological science acceptable by IBMS/HPC
* HCPC Registration
* IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent, or 24 months proven experience in Cellular Pathology


Skills and Experience

* Practical analytical skills in diagnostic laboratory work
* Timely, accurate, and methodical working
* Well organized and precise
* Competent in PC software
* Reliable, trustworthy, quick learner, team player, self-motivated, flexible, able to work under pressure
