Job overview

The ACP role will work collaboratively with the clinical team caring for children and young people undergoing Gene Therapy for Non-malignant Haematology and supporting where appropriate Bone Marrow Transplantation and Apheresis.

This role is aimed at developing ways of working for all Haematology nurses and the medical team with the inpatient, outpatient and paediatric day unit, enabling them to take on roles and responsibilities that would complement the current services delivered.

The ACP will integrate into the existing haematology team to carry out extended roles which will include routine management of children and young people undergoing treatment.

Using advanced clinical decision making and assessment skills, the ACP will assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical care and management of children and people undergoing treatment.

They will play a key role in educating patients about treatment related toxicities and use evidence based best practice care in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of early and late treatment-related toxicities and complications. They will be involved in preparing children and young people for treatment, arranging necessary tests, coordinating and managing care.

The purpose of the post is to provide safe, evidence-based nurse-led care to children and young people at an advanced nurse level demonstrating advanced theory and clinical knowledge, clinical leadership and advanced decision-making skills.

Main duties of the job

3. The ACP will play a pivotal role in proving essential continuity of competent, comprehensive and co-ordinated care for children and their families.

5. Using advanced clinical decision making and assessment skills, the ACP will assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical care and management of children and people undergoing treatment.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria

7. RN Child/RSCN
8. Post registration qualification in specialty, e.g. Haematology, Haemoglobinopathies, Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant
9. Non-medical prescriber V300
10. Educated to postgraduate MSc/PGDip in Advanced Clinical Practitioner

Desirable criteria

11. MSc/MRes or working towards this qualification
12. Leadership or Management qualification (or working towards
13. IRMER Qualification

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

14. Sound knowledge and understanding of current issues in specialty
15. Experience in managing complaints and quality assurance
16. Years of experience at Senior Charge Nurse/Sister or Clinical Nurse Specialist Band 7 level within specialty
17. Budget management

Desirable criteria

18. Evidence in Quality Improvement/Project Management
19. Has introduced a Change in Practice
20. Evidence of Research / Publications

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

21. Organisation and management skills, i.e. Negotiating skills, Team building skills and Appraisal skills
22. Articulate with advanced written and verbal communication skills
23. Ability to undertake surveys or audits, as necessary e.g. audit of clinical incidents
24. Ability to manage change

25. IT Skills (Including proficiency with Microsoft Office Packages and accurate, fast typing skills)
