Description The Commercial function is accountable for the effective control of commercial risks, liabilities, exposures, and opportunities within all our trading relationships. The Year in industry student will support the more senior commercial staff in the administration of costs and contracts relating to projects. The role may involve all aspects of work from the initial tender to final account and close out, seeking to minimise the costs and enhance value for money whilst achieving the required standards and quality. This role will work under the close direction and supervision of a more senior Quantity Surveyor and in Durham / Bishop Auckland. Responsibilities Key Responsibilities Developing an understanding of the built environment and project management triangle (time, cost and quality) Assisting in the preparation of subcontract enquiries, analysing tenders returns, and supporting the administration of select packages (including orders, payments & final accounts) in accordance with company procedures Assisting with the appraisal of subcontract applications for payment or assisting with the assessment & preparation of payment notices Assisting with capturing, managing, and communicating change and risk on the project in accordance with the contract Assisting with the reporting of the Project Budget / Cost Report Undertake first hand experience on the application of constructions methods Undertake record-keeping including but not limited to collating site records, the preparation of meeting packs, meeting invites, and taking meeting minutes Understanding the implications of health, safety and environmental regulations Ensure all health, safety and environmental risk situations are brought to the attention of Contract Leader / Project Manager Obtain a CSCS card (and meet other project requirements) to enable access to live site Qualifications Essential Will be working towards an RICS/CICES accredited degree or other agreed qualification Five GCSE's, grade AC or certified equivalent, including maths and English language Be organised Be curious and strive to understand the ‘why’ Be proactive in self development Use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint Understand the importance of different communication styles (eg. effective oral, written, graphic and presentation) Ability to work in teams An appetite to ensure theory is supplemented with practical first-hand experience and its application Developing an appreciation of company policies, procedures and controls, office management systems and document control, contractual correspondence; commercial management standards, financial reporting; programme evaluation; health, safety and environmental regulations * Please indicate what university you are currently studying at in your application and confirm your course includes a placement year.
