An exciting maternity cover opportunity has arisen for a Nursing Associate or experienced HCA to join the Bovey Tracey &Chudleigh Practice. This is a fixed term positionof up to 27 hours per week. Salary is negotiable depending on experience.
Main duties of the job
The positionwill be well suited to an individual who has previous primary care nursing associate or HCA experience. Experience in cervical smears, diabetes checks, wound management and venepuncture is desirable.The individual shouldbe enthusiastic about providing high-quality patient service with strongcommunication and administrative skills.

Job responsibilities
Mainresponsibilities
Undertake dressings
Undertake screening including BP checks, height, weight, BMI & Urinalysis
Carryout Well Person Checks and New Patient Medicals
Undertakevenepuncture, following training.
Health Promotion
Make basic assessment of needs of patient
Provide nutritional advice on Obesity, Raised Cholesterol, CHD and Diabetes
Understand patients motivation to adapt their lifestyle
Administerinjections under individual prescription or Patient Group Direction, followingtraining.
Ensuresafe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
Ear Care
Undertakeear syringing, following training.
Advisepatients about safe ear care.
Infection Control
Applyinfection control measures within the Practice according to local and nationalguidelines. This includes:-
oUniversalhygiene precautions.
oThecollection and handling of laboratory specimens
oSegregationand disposal of waste materials
oDecontaminationof instruments and clinical equipment
oReportingand treatment of sharps injuries
oDealingwith blood and body fluid spillages
Assistpatients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures.
Emergency Management
Iscompetent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.
Has aworking knowledge of the national and local Cervical Cytology and mammographyscreening programmes.
Candiscuss breast self awareness, demonstrate self-breast examination and providesupporting literature to patients.
Candiscuss and give basic advice on male health issues and provide supportingliterature to patients.
Care and Programme Management
Diabetes
Has abasic understanding of diabetes
Assistsin the diagnosis of diabetic patients and makes appropriate referrals
Suppliesappropriate material for patient education
Is ableto manage the emergency treatment of a diabetic patient withhypo/hyperglycaemic attack according to Practice Guidelines.
Cardiovascular Disease
Has abasic understanding of the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system.
Identifyand advise patients on risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease i.e.BP, lipid, glucose monitoring, family history, smoking, diet and exercise.
Understandsthe basic management of patients with hypertension, angina, myocardialinfarction and cerebro-vascular accident.
