An opportunity has arisen to work as a civilian medical officer in the Aircrew Equipment Integration Group at the RAF Centre of Aerospace Medicine (RAF CAM) RAF Henlow, Bedfordshire, SG16 6DN. This post would be suited ideally to a medical practitioner with enthusiasm and experience in the aviation environment.
The purpose of this role is to provide specialist Aviation and Space Medicine (ASM) advice to relevant stakeholders within the UK.
The incumbent will provide specialist ASM advice in the field of protective and life support equipment for aircrew. This will include equipment testing, evaluation, integration into aircraft platforms across defence and directing integration programmes for aircrew equipment assemblies and other devices with consideration of the human factors and medical impact related to the integration. The successful candidate will:
Responsibilities
* Be a focus for specialist advice and operational support for aircrew equipment assemblies both above and below neck to Ministry of Defence Delivery Teams, Front Line Commands and individuals.
* Provide specialist aviation medical advice, on systems design and integration for tasked projects.
* Direct integration programmes for aircrew equipment assemblies and other devices with consideration of the Human Factors related to the integration.
* Be involved with clinical, occupational and aviation medicine assessments of aircrew.
With experience, the job role will expand to include teaching and lecturing duties, reviewing and setting standards for aircrew protective equipment and participation in various committees and working groups.
Qualifications
Applicants would be expected to have, or would be supported in gaining, qualifications in ASM. Ideally candidates should have the Diploma in Aviation Medicine (DAvMed) or aim to achieve this qualification once appointed.
Facilities and relocation
RAF Henlow is well placed for transport links to London and elsewhere and the facilities include catering, and gym (charges may apply). However, there is a possibility that RAF CAM may relocate to Lincolnshire in the long-term. Single living accommodation (charges apply) including access to designated parking may be available for an initial period to permit the successful applicant to find local accommodation. The successful applicant may apply to become a member of the RAF Officers’ Mess, enabling access to Mess facilities and social events.
