About the role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) is on a journey towards a sustainable and secure energy future. Together we build on this momentum, advancing the Electricity System Operator's (ESO) plan for zero carbon operability of the electricity system by 2025.

Are you an analytical thinker with a passion for energy and a strategic mindset? Do you thrive in a dynamic, real-time environment where your insights directly contribute to national security and efficiency?

Join our team as a Senior Energy Operations Strategy Analyst and play a pivotal role in shaping Great Britain's cleaner, greener electricity system.

This is a critical and exciting opportunity to directly contribute to the security and efficiency of our national electricity supply. As a Senior Energy Operations Strategy Analyst, you will be responsible for coordinating and optimising the energy strategy from two weeks ahead to day-ahead. You'll provide essential insight into system operational issues for the electricity control room, working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

You will provide crucial data analysis and clear explanations to the Control Room team, not just producing data but presenting findings in an understandable format for diverse audiences. Your role involves delivering day-ahead operational analysis with strict daily deadlines (typically by 4:00–5:00 PM each day).

Through coordination with European Transmission System Operators, you'll analyse supply and demand margins, advising internal and external stakeholders to enhance situational awareness.

This is a key role where you'll directly contribute to the security and efficiency of our national energy supply, offering an exciting opportunity to apply your skills across various teams and processes.

We're looking for someone passionate about process improvement and energy, with a strong understanding of data visualisation to aid communication across all stakeholder levels.

This role requires accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines, including working on a rota covering a weekend every 6 weeks in our Wokingham office, requiring regular attendance.

Key accountabilities

* Model and forecast energy requirements by bringing together data on Demand, wholesale prices, and interconnector movements to understand market behaviour.
* Work with teams across NESO to develop the strategy to manage power system risks and system plan coordination to maintain security of supply.
* Facilitate key decisions to optimise system operations.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of ongoing operability issues and opportunities.
* Engage in post-event analyses to refine processes and communication.
* Serve in analytical and liaison roles during real-time incidents.

About you

What we do isn't just important – it's essential. That's why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we're looking for someone who has:

· A degree in a relevant STEM field, or equivalent experience in the energy industry

· A demontrated interest in the energy sector, with a great appreciation for how price fluctuations influence demand and generation.

· Strategic mindset with the ability to manage operational timescales effectively.

· Comfortable with statistical modelling, data visualisation, and Excel, with an ability to turn complex data into clear insights.

· Expertise in programming languages (Python, SQL, R and VBA) would be an advantage.

Research shows that some people may hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. At NESO, we believe potential comes in many forms and we're committed to a fair, inclusive recruitment process where everyone can show their talents. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds to build a workforce that feels valued and respected and represents the communities we serve.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users' need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won't just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you'll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

More information

This role closes on 23rd February at 23:59, however we encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible and not wait until the published closing date as this can vary.

We work towards the highest standards in everything we do, including how we support, value and develop our people. Our aim is to encourage and support employees to thrive and be the best they can be. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, and offer flexible and tailored support, at home and in the office.

We're committed to building a workforce that represents the communities we serve, and a working environment in which each individual feels valued, respected, fairly treated, and able to reach their full potential.
