University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is a leading acute trust delivering high‑quality care across Sussex. We are looking for an experienced Orthoptist to join the team at St Richards Hospital, Chichester.
Job Overview
Band 5–6 / permanent, full‑time (part‑time or flexible hours considered). Salary £32 073 – £48 117 depending on experience. The role covers a mixed paediatric and adult caseload, with additional opportunities for extended roles in stroke, medical retina and glaucoma.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Communicate effectively with patients, parents, carers and multidisciplinary team members; manage consent and provide educational material.
* Maintain accurate patient records and assist in data collection for service development and clinical audit.
* Provide independent orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management of patients across all ages, including pre‑term infants to the elderly.
* Perform routine and advanced clinical procedures such as auto‑refraction, Humphrey perimetry, pupillary dilation and pre‑post‑operative measurements.
* Participate in departmental teaching, mentoring students and junior staff, and support teaching of orthoptics to other health‑care professionals.
* Contribute to departmental quality improvement, policy review and evidence‑based practice.
* Work autonomously while liaising with senior orthoptists and ophthalmologists for referrals and surgical planning.
Person Specification
* Diploma or Degree in Orthoptics.
* HCPC registration.
* Teaching qualification.
* Experience in paediatric and adult orthoptics.
* Knowledge of department audit practices.
* Experience of an extended role in stroke.
Skills and Competencies
* Excellent organisational and workload management skills.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to recognise limits and seek assistance.
* Willingness to teach orthoptics to students and other professionals.
