Band 7 Health and Justice Senior Practitioner

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Health & Justice Pathway Lead to join our Health & Justice Service at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

This Band 7 role provides senior clinical leadership at the interface of health and the criminal justice system. The post holder will be formally responsible for the supervision, development and performance management of staff within the Health & Justice service. They will also deliver expert assessment, advice, and intervention for vulnerable individuals in police custody, courts, prisons, and community settings.

The role requires autonomous clinical decision-making, strong multi‑agency working, and the ability to manage high‑risk and complex presentations, ensuring individuals receive timely, appropriate care and diversion to health and social care services where indicated.


Main duties of the job

Take a senior clinical role in delivering the Health & Justice service across Birmingham and Solihull, including community outreach pathways.

Undertake comprehensive, specialist assessments for individuals with complex needs and vulnerabilities within various criminal justice settings and the community.

Make autonomous, high-level clinical decisions regarding risk, diversion, admission, discharge, and onward care planning.

Provide expert clinical advice and recommendations to Police, Courts, CPS, Probation, and other criminal justice partners.

Lead and support staff in triage, screening, assessment, and case management.

Contribute to public protection and safeguarding through effective risk management, MAPPA engagement, and crisis planning in high-risk cases.

Support service governance through audit, data reporting, incident management, and adherence to professional, legal, and organisational standards (including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act).

Deliver teaching, training, and professional development to health and criminal justice colleagues and support the education and assessment of students.

Provide line management, clinical supervision and appraisal for designated staff, including students.

Contribute to recruitment, induction, training and ongoing development of staff within the Health & Justice service.

Address performance, capability, and wellbeing issues in line with Trust policies, escalating concerns appropriately.

£49,387 to £56,515 a year per annum, pro rata
