We are looking for two dynamic and motivated Consultants Gastroenterologist to join our friendly and enthusiastic gastroenterology team at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT).

This is an opportunity to join a highly motivated gastroenterology team in providing a comprehensive service of the highest quality. The service is looking to expand its sub specialty interests in IBD and Liver disease; however, we would welcome interest from candidates with interest in any sub speciality areas of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Successful appointees will join the existing 13 consultants (plus 2 Consultant Endoscopists) in the delivery of high-quality provision of inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Clinical Nutrition services to this large Trust, incorporating University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The post-holder will participate in the gastroenterology consultant of the week on call, including out of hours GI bleed on call or G(I)M on call.


Main duties of the job

The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities (PAs), with elective outpatient work, endoscopy, and inpatient care. At present, there will be a 1:5 Gastroenterology ward commitment to cover inpatient activity on the gastroenterology ward during which time all elective commitments are cancelled (see timetable). The job plan is indicative only and is negotiable to take the candidates aspirations/special interest/part time working into account. There will be no requirement to do G(I)M. The job plan includes GI bleed on calls.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

The postholder(s) will be based at their nominal base site with a commitment to in-patient and out-patient services agreed in their Timetable and Job Plan.

The postholder(s) will undertake clinical work in conjunction with his/her colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop gastroenterology services and specialist skills in accordance with the needs of the department. And will be responsible in conjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of these services.

The postholder(s) will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to Consultant colleagues in other clinical disciplines in the hospital, and to general practitioners in County Durham and Darlington area.

Consultants will cover colleagues in their absence and ensure continuous patient care.

For management purposes and use of resources the postholder(s) will be accountable to the Clinical Lead and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

The postholder will be responsible for the professional and basic educational supervision of junior staff as Clinical/Education Supervisors for trainees.

The postholder will participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.

Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged. Limited research funding may be available, following successful applications to the local research and development committee.

The postholder(s) is responsible for ensuring that they meet the national requirements for Continuing Professional Development, both internal and external. And will be expected to attend regularly, and contribute to, the educational events held by the Directorate.

It is expected that the appointee(s) will actively and regularly participate in clinical audit.

The postholder(s) will participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines and in respect of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current best practice.

The Trust considers the annual consultant appraisal as part of the contractual arrangements. The postholder(s) will be required to prepare for and undergo appraisal once a year.

CPD forms part of the national consultant contract. Consultant appointments at CDDFT can expect £1100 CPD funding over a 12 month period for up to 10 days study leave annually, which can be rolled over to a maximum of 30 days over a three year period (£3300 funding).

The postholder(s) will be expected to deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases of annual leave, study leave and sickness as far as practicable.

Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the Health Authority, such as domiciliary consultation, or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, may be undertaken.

An office, computer and secretarial support will be available to the appointee.

The postholder(s) will be expected to actively contribute to delivering a 7 day speciality service.

Statutory Registration

* Full and specialist registration with GMC (and licence to Practice).
* Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within 6 months of attaining CCT in Specialty at time of interview.
