Project Manager - Public Transport WMF2327i
Job description
INTERNAL ONLY
Location: Kendal
Contract Type: Permanent
About this opportunity
Are you passionate about making a real difference to public transport and community mobility? The Westmorland and Furness Local Authority Public Transport Team is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join us in delivering vital transport services across the region.
Our team manages a diverse range of services including supported bus services, community transport initiatives, community rail partnerships, the English National Concessionary Travel scheme, and innovative transport projects. Together, we work to ensure accessible, reliable, and sustainable transport options for all residents.
As Project Manager, you will be responsible for defining, developing and delivering complex projects with significant risk and visibility. You will manage delivery to high standards by preparing robust project documentation and plans in line with programme methodology, ensuring objectives, costs and timescales are clearly set out and achieved. The role involves conducting business analysis to identify service improvements, efficiencies and innovations, while also researching best practice from partners, suppliers and peer organisations to inform solutions.
A central part of the role is engaging and supporting staff and stakeholders as services transition from current to future models, ensuring that change is implemented smoothly and that benefits are fully realised. You will lead project teams, ensuring the delivery of agreed objectives, quality outputs and value for money. Advising project boards, resolving issues and recommending corrective actions will also be a key part of sustaining momentum and ensuring success. This opportunity offers the chance to play a central role in shaping the future of public transport services across Cumbria, ensuring they are efficient, sustainable and meet the needs of local communities.
Who we are looking for…
We are seeking an experienced project manager with the skills and confidence to deliver change in a large organisation. You should bring a balance of strategic thinking, operational delivery and strong stakeholder engagement skills.
You will have a degree-level qualification or equivalent experience, along with a proven record of delivering significant change projects, ideally in the public sector. Strong stakeholder management is essential, including the ability to resolve conflict, build consensus and communicate effectively at all levels.
The successful candidate will be highly organised, able to work under pressure and confident in managing competing priorities. You will bring strong analytical and communication skills, together with the ability to challenge existing practices constructively and champion new ways of working. An understanding of the challenges within local and national government, and the political sensitivity to manage complex change, will be vital to success in this role.
