Purpose
This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Overview
This post is intended for registrar grade doctors who wish to be eligible for a UK consultant post in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery via the CESR route. A Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) is the essential requirement for doctors via non-deanery training to be eligible to apply for a UK substantive post.
The intended appointment is for a period of 3 years and is subject to a satisfactory annual review equivalent to the ARCP process. On completion of this, there will be opportunity for an extra year as a senior speciality fellow.
At the end of the rotation it is expected that the individual will have completed the FRCS (T&O) and will be at specialty fellowship level.

Key Responsibilities
* Regular orthopaedic outpatient clinics (1–2 days per week) covering both elective and trauma.
* Trauma operating sessions (1–2 days per week).
* Elective operating sessions.
* On‑call duties as part of the senior on‑call rota (usually Fridays and weekend nights).
* Supervise the treatment of patients in the Trust.
* Carry out regular ward rounds (1–2 per week).
* Admin and SPA time available, plus study leave.
* Participate in clinical audit within the unit.
* Actively involve in training and supervision of junior medical staff on ward rounds, in theatre and in clinics, including teaching medical and nursing students.
* Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices.
Qualifications
* Minimum 6 years of specialty training.
* Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g. FRCP, FRCA, FRCS).
* Portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression in line with the curriculum for the specialty similar to a deanery trainee.
Remuneration and Benefits
Trust‑appointed fellows will be paid at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, with additional remuneration for extra hours, weekend allowance, and any hours attracting enhanced pay. Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. The award includes 35 days paid holiday (pro‑rata), a generous pension scheme, and NHS employee discounts.
Additional Information
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application. Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, with a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post and opportunities for CPD and study leave.
