About The Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School is seeking to appoint a practicing GP as Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice to complement the current research strengths in the Department of Primary Care & Public Health. Associate Professor and upward are senior career‑grade teaching and research positions expected to show academic leadership in both teaching and research, and to support the management and strategic planning processes of the School and the University.

About You

The postholder will lead their own programme of research and we especially welcome candidates with research interests linked to key strengths at BSMS including global health/infection, cancer, mental health, health inequalities, population health/prevention and the health of coastal communities. The successful candidate will undertake research within the department, contribute to research leadership and research‑led undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and work with BSMS GP colleagues and across NIHR Applied Research Collaboration regions of Kent, Surrey & Sussex to support research engagement in primary care.

They will contribute to the delivery and further development of teaching in general practice across the School, taking a leadership role in providing undergraduate BMBS students with an excellent experience of general practice across the curriculum. The postholder will engage with external organisations and networks to support strong relationships across undergraduate and postgraduate training, and lead student‑led general practice activities and career development. The Professor will work with colleagues to encourage and enable GP colleagues beyond BSMS to engage with the undergraduate teaching programme, including placements, Student Selected Components and 4th year Individual Research Project placements.

For a Professorial level the candidate will be expected to make a broad and sustained contribution to their field nationally and internationally, and demonstrate sustained exceptional performance in research, innovation, education, leadership and management. They will undertake formal School‑level leadership roles appropriate to their background and portfolio, and will establish a 0.2 FTE role in a local GP practice and hold an appropriate honorary contract with NHS England or another relevant body.
