Dispensary Manager - Fortuneswell Pharmacy
An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a registered Pharmacy Technician to join Fortuneswell Pharmacy as the Dispensary Manager. Fortuneswell Pharmacy is a wholly owned subsidiary Outpatient Pharmacy located next to the Fortuneswell Chemotherapy Unit at Dorset County Hospital. For the last 7 years, our service has supplied medicines to patients and provided pharmaceutical advice to haematology and oncology outpatients and healthcare professionals. We have recently undergone a major refurbishment programme, and are looking to extend the high level of service offered to the rest of Dorset County Hospital’s outpatients. We also provide a home delivery service to patients across Dorset.
Salary is negotiable based on experience and includes an annual performance‑based bonus. The role is permanent and full‑time. Working pattern is full‑time at the Fortuneswell Pharmacy site (Williams Avenue, Dorchester, DT1 2JY, Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust).
Key Responsibilities
* Manage a high‑quality dispensary to ensure a safe, accurate and efficient service, making best use of staff skills and resources.
* Contribute to the management and development of the outpatient pharmacy service by promoting innovation, streamlining working practices, and implementing agreed changes.
* Manage dispensary processes and workflow, coordinating with other pharmacy staff to meet the service needs both clinically and operationally.
* Monitor dispensary performance using the Prescription Tracking System and direct workflow as necessary to ensure compliance with agreed targets.
* Develop dispensary services and implement change when necessary.
* Coordinate and provide training to other members of the pharmacy team as appropriate.
* Ensure training records of all staff are kept up to date.
* Ensure good working practices and procedures are in place, adhered to and regularly updated to reflect current work practice, legislation and local policy.
* Assist in the control, supply and denaturing of Controlled Drugs.
* Develop a programme of Accuracy Checking for Dispensing Assistants.
* Ensure appropriate stock control and records are maintained.
* Receive and issue work and handle prescription payments in accordance with SOPs.
* Investigate and resolve customer complaints and enquiries.
* Monitor and investigate dispensing errors and near‑miss data to identify trends and develop SOPs and staff training to prevent further errors.
* Stay aware of current national issues regarding technician development and legislation.
* Participate in other duties appropriate to the grade at the request of the relevant manager.
* Take a lead role in quality improvement and service development initiatives.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Knowledge & Experience
* Significant experience as a pharmacy technician at Band 5 or above.
* Significant experience of working in and managing/supporting a dispensary environment.
* Experience of management and supervision of staff, including direction of work, prioritisation skills and feedback.
* In‑depth understanding of formulary and medicines management issues and their implications for dispensary services.
* Good knowledge of therapeutic drug use in clinical situations gained by continuing professional development.
* Comprehensive understanding of JAC Pharmacy Systems and their application for dispensing, stock management and electronic prescribing.
* Thorough understanding of the legislation, procedures and protocols surrounding clinical trials and unlicensed medicines.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the legal requirements (law and ethics) for dispensing and supplying medicines, including controlled drugs and over‑the‑counter sales.
* Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety issues and their implications for staff, including COSHH.
Education & Qualification
* Level 3 qualification in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
* Registered Technician with the General Pharmacy Council (GPhC).
* Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) status.
* Practice Supervisor Qualification.
* Level 3 Management certificate or equivalent leadership qualification.
Skills & Abilities
* Demonstrated ability to check prescriptions whilst working independently.
* Knowledge of the legal aspects of technician checking and the law relating to prescriptions.
* Good and broad understanding of pharmacy practice to support and advise staff.
* Ability to work methodically and accurately.
* Capability to analyse and interpret prescriptions, identify problems and decide upon an appropriate course of action.
* Ability to work under minimum supervision.
* Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative, plan and organise activities, adjusting plans and priorities as necessary.
* Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English.
* Computer literacy and keyboard skills.
* Ability to work flexibly within a team while supervising, motivating and directing a team.
* Commitment to continuing professional development.
Salary & Benefits
£31,049 to £46,580 per annum (dependent upon experience). The role includes an annual performance‑based bonus and continues professional development support.
