Job Overview

The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence‑based patient care. Clinical expertise is utilised during the immediate post‑operative period within PACU and Recovery. Skilled assistance is provided in the post‑operative care of the patient and in other satellite areas such as Obstetrics and Ophthalmology.


Main Duties

* Take responsibility for a patient or a defined group of patients as delegated.
* Demonstrate an ability to undertake comprehensive holistic assessments and care of patients requiring advanced post‑operative care (up to Level 1+ Critical Care).
* Continually assess the patient’s condition throughout the post‑operative period, anticipating any changes required.
* Plan and prioritise the care and needs of the patient and evaluate their response to deliver the highest standard of care.
* Ensure continuity of care through the peri‑operative period, communicating information effectively (written and verbal) with the relevant disciplines within the theatre department and other clinical areas.
* Identify when a patient has met the criteria for safe transfer back to the source ward (apart from PACU patients); recognise and alert the clinical team when a patient requires a higher level of support, e.g. transfer to Intensive Care.
* Facilitate discharge home of PACU patients as per guidelines; liaise with the discharge coordinator when transfer to ward/HDU is required for PACU patients needing further post‑operative care.


Person Specification

* Qualifications and/or Knowledge
o NMC Registered Nurse / HCPC Registered Operating Practitioner
* Desirable Qualifications
o Teaching/Mentoring/Assessing Qualification
o Evidence of ongoing professional development
o Immediate Life Support
* Experience
o Essential: Previous experience of working within a theatre environment.
o Desirable: Experience in a wide variety of clinical specialties within the operating department.
* Values

o Act with understanding of other people’s difficulties.
* Other Requirements
o Must be able to participate on the night‑shift rota.
o Ability to speak Welsh.
* Aptitude and Abilities
o Able to consistently demonstrate high quality patient care.

o Able to assume delegated responsibilities within a multi‑disciplinary setting while recognising own dexterity limitations.
o Motivated.
