The Oncology Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) is a leading centre for the treatment and support of patients with cancer. The service provides comprehensive, patient-centred care across a wide range of tumour types, integrating advanced systemic therapies and radiotherapy with holistic support. Based at the purpose-built Guy's Cancer Centre and at Queen Mary\'s Hospital, Sidcup, the department delivers high quality outpatient, acute and inpatient oncology services. With a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and clinical research, the team works closely with a dedicated clinical trials unit, including early-phase studies, to ensure patients have access to the latest innovations in cancer care.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced clinician with a specialist interest in Neuro and Prostate cancers. This Consultant post comprises 10.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) and is focused on supporting the Prostate Service at GSTT, and the Neuro-oncology and Skull Base services at both GSTT and KCH.


Responsibilities and duties

Main duties of the job:

* To provide clinical oncology services to the GSTFT Cancer Centre and South East London Cancer Network.
* To participate in research activities and clinical trials as required.
* To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
* To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
* To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.

Job duties and responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities include working with consultant colleagues to provide Clinical Oncology services, with duties including diagnosis and treatment across GSTT sites, ongoing responsibility for patients, and occasional domiciliary consultations. The post holder will work in joint clinics and be supported by other oncologists in the MDT. Inpatient care is delivered via a ward attending rota shared by all consultants, with approximately 2 weeks of ward cover per year.

Teaching, training and research are integral to the post, with expectations to contribute to undergraduate teaching, training of junior staff, and participation in clinical trials and governance. Clinical governance, service development, and management responsibilities are also outlined, along with a commitment to flexible working and adherence to Trust policies.

The successful applicant will:

* Provide high quality care to patients and maintain GMC specialist registration and licence to practice
* Engage in education, teaching, and training including Educational Supervisor responsibilities as appropriate
* Collaborate to enhance translational research and meet governance requirements
* Work with colleagues to achieve clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, and cost-effective service delivery
* Manage junior medical staff, recruitment, leave, and on-call commitments
* Participate in governance activities, audit, and adherence to NICE guidelines
* Represent the Trust at clinical networks and contribute to leadership, strategy, and team working


Qualifications and experience

Professional qualifications (Essential):

* MRCP
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry on the Specialist Register in Clinical Oncology and either CCT or within six months of attaining CCT

(Desirable): MD or PhD or equivalent qualifications.

Clinical experience (Essential):

* Training in management of Neuro and Prostate cancers
* Experience of multidisciplinary cancer care
* Experience of clinical trial development and operation
* Experience of Acute Oncology
* Broad training in Clinical Oncology including radiotherapy and systemic therapy
* Experience in IMRT and IGRT

(Desirable): SABR and SRS experience.

Clinical skills (Essential):

* Ability to work as a multidisciplinary team member
* Good communication skills

Audit, management and IT (Essential):

* Track record in clinical governance, audit, and IT skills
* Understanding of audit principles

Research, teaching and training (Essential):

* Experience in clinical trials and research ethics
* Experience teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior staff

(Desirable):

* Original peer-reviewed research and commitment to teaching

Leadership and management (Essential):

* Organisational and time management skills
* Clinical audit experience and ability to lead and motivate staff
* Effective communication, teamwork, adaptability and budget awareness

(Desirable): understanding of clinical management role.


Governance, strategy and leadership

Further responsibilities include clinical governance, audit, incident reporting, patient involvement, NICE guideline adherence, and overall leadership within the Directorate; participation in business planning and external clinical networks as delegated by the Clinical Director; chairing specialty meetings and maintaining infection control standards.


Administrative support

Consultants are supported by a team of admin coordinators, treatment schedulers and medical secretaries. IT equipment and office accommodation are available to the successful postholder.
