With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Transmission Commercial team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to deliver the required transmission infrastructure to support Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.
A Lead Design Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design for transmission network projects (132kV, 275kV, and 400kV).
You will oversee high-value, complex projects within the portfolio, supervise and develop less experienced staff, and provide engineering specifications, innovative solutions, technical support, advice, coaching, and input throughout project lifecycles.
What you’ll be doing
* Leading the development of pre-contract designs and project delivery, focusing on the technical aspects of OHL systems and associated equipment.
* Promoting professionalism with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement.
* Assessing engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance, supporting budget preparation, and assisting with construction and outage planning for OHL circuits.
* Preparing detailed engineering specifications for OHL system designs and costs for high-value, complex projects.
* Driving resolution of statutory, land, or other consent issues related to OHL routes.
* Providing technical assessments of tenders and making recommendations to the project team.
* Defining OHL equipment requirements for System Construction Authorization (SCA), project specifications, and BETTA documentation.
* Reviewing and preparing OHL drawings and technical specifications for construction and procurement.
* Managing correspondence and drawings issued to project teams.
* Ensuring designs and practices comply with legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
* Leading technical resolution of site/construction OHL issues and analyzing faults to prevent recurrence.
* Assessing tenders, supporting bid evaluations, and providing technical support to project teams on design, construction, operation, and maintenance matters.
* Preparing project quality documentation and ensuring delivery of quality standards.
* Driving industry best practices, technological advances, and applying new ideas for cost savings, safety, and efficiency.
* Contributing to training needs and developing safety and operational packages for new products.
* Mentoring less experienced staff and liaising with multidisciplinary teams for integrated solutions.
What you’ll bring
* Engineering degree or HND/HNC with equivalent experience.
* Progress toward professional institution membership.
* Significant experience in transmission overhead line engineering and associated equipment.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration.
* Promoting CDM and health & safety best practices in design.
* Experience delivering engineering solutions for high-value, complex OHL projects.
* Ability to influence senior managers and produce clear technical reports.
Minimum Requirements:
* Engineering degree or HND/HNC with 5 years of relevant experience.
* Proven experience in delivering complex transmission OHL projects.
* Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
