Join to apply for the General Practice Nurse role at NHS.

Job summary: We are looking for a Registered Nurse (new to practice) to join our established and friendly nursing team at Glastonbury Surgery. This is an ideal role for a qualified nurse who hasn’t worked in general practice and is looking to grow and expand their nursing skills in a structured and supportive clinical environment. The role is 37 hours per week with a flexible pattern (Monday - Friday) to be discussed with the successful candidate. The position offers opportunities across a diverse clinical portfolio with high-quality care in a modern environment, free parking, NHS Pension, and no weekend working. Training in chronic disease management or related areas is desirable. The role is employed through a West Mendip Primary Care Network contract and based at Glastonbury Surgery.

Responsibilities

* Deliver a portfolio of services to the registered population of approximately 14,000 patients, including: wound management, screening, health promotion, vaccinations and immunisations, ear care, infection control, emergency management, child health protection, men’s health, family planning, women’s health, travel health advice, and chronic disease management.


Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* BASE: Glastonbury Surgery
* HOURS: 37 hours per week
* SALARY: £31,736.63 per annum (pro rata)
* ACCOUNTABLE TO: GPs, Lead Nurse, and Practice Manager
* JOB SUMMARY: Provide care directly to patients with referrals to GPs as necessary


Clinical Areas and Examples of Responsibilities

* Wound Management: perform wound care using aseptic techniques; dressings (including leg ulcers); suture and clip removal
* Screening: opportunistic BP checks, height/weight/BMI, urinalysis, smoking status; venepuncture; INR monitoring
* Health Promotion: healthy eating, smoking cessation, physical activity advice, alcohol guidance, referrals
* Vaccinations and Immunisations: administer injections, vaccine storage/handling, adult and childhood immunisations, develop and work to POGs for POMs
* Ear Care: ear syringing (following training) and safe ear care advice
* Infection Control: promote infection control measures; apply guidelines for universal hygiene, specimen handling, waste disposal, instrument decontamination; sharps injury handling
* Emergency Management: competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques
* Child Health Protection: recognise signs of child abuse; documentation and referral pathways
* Men’s Health: advice on issues including testicular health, continence, sexual health; opportunistic consultations and referrals
* Family Planning: contraception advice and referrals, emergency contraception support, interval checks for hormonal contraception
* Women’s Health: cervical cytology, mammography screening awareness; sample taking under supervision; health promotion and STI guidance
* Travel Health: pre-travel advice, vaccinations/medications, malaria prophylaxis, bite prevention, safe sex, food hygiene, sun protection, emergencies
* Chronic Disease Management: lead nurse clinics for diabetes, heart failure, asthma & COPD; assist and support clinics
* Personal and Professional Development: clinical audit, mentoring, teamwork, maintaining professional standards, clinical supervision


Person Specification

* Essential qualifications: Registered General Nurse; current NMC registration with re-validation
* Desirable: willingness to undergo training; post-registration chronic disease training
* Experience: working at Tier 2 level; not previously in West Mendip PCN in the last 12 months; desirable: chronic disease management experience in primary care
* Knowledge and skills: strong interpersonal and teamwork; quality care; communication; time management; confidentiality and data security; initiative; ability to work under pressure
* Desirable IT: Microsoft Office; EMIS Web
