About the Role
The Senior Laboratory Technician will play a critical role within the Mettis Metallurgical Laboratory, predominantly supporting the Mechanical Testing department while also contributing to broader quality functions. The post-holder will take ownership of the Test House area, ensuring all work is received, logged, prioritised, and completed on time and in line with accredited laboratory standards.
This role requires a methodical, procedure‑driven individual with significant attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage a varied workload with minimal supervision. The Senior Laboratory Technician will collaborate closely with Metallurgists, Technicians, and other internal stakeholders to maintain high‑quality testing output, support audits, manage documentation, and uphold the integrity of laboratory processes.
Flexibility, ownership, and a commitment to quality and safety are essential, as well as the ability to provide reasonable overtime support when required.

Successful candidates will undergo Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employment and may also be subject to random testing throughout their employment.
As a condition of employment, successful candidates are required to fulfil a DBS clearance before commencing this role, to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
* Take overall responsibility for the Mechanical Testing area (Test House), including logging, tracking, and completing all incoming work efficiently
* Oversee and coordinate all mechanical testing activities, prioritising workload in line with business needs
* Liaise closely with the Metallurgist and Laboratory Manager to align testing priorities and work orders
* Maintain high standards of documentation, reporting, and record‑keeping for all activities within the Met Lab
* Support special process audits and laboratory compliance activities
* Support the HSE department as required
* Contribute to Round Robin and PTP testing activities
* Follow all technical procedures methodically and consistently
* Execute ad hoc duties including data entry via LIMS, stock control, record‑keeping, and preventative maintenance checks
Safety Responsibilities
* Comply with EHS and legislative standards
* Adhere to PPE requirements and all Mettis safety policies and procedures
* Promote and model safe working practices
* Participate in risk assessments and near‑miss mitigation activities
Quality Responsibilities
* Ensure the testing service provided is of the highest standard
* Deliver all tasks right first time to required quality and laboratory accreditation standards
Delivery Responsibilities
* Complete testing tasks within agreed timelines and to the required standard
* Support efficient workflow management to meet internal customer expectations
Cost Responsibilities
* Proactively identify cost‑saving opportunities that do not compromise quality or service
People Responsibilities
* Maintain professional standards of communication with internal and external stakeholders
* Work in compliance with all Mettis HR policies and procedures
Business Responsibilities

Qualifications
* Experience in mechanical testing (advantageous)
* Experience working in a NADCAP or ISO 17025 accredited laboratory (desirable)
* Calibration experience for laboratory equipment
* Knowledge of Uncertainty of Measurement budgets (advantageous)
* High level of accuracy and attention to detail
* Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
* Ability to use company IT systems or similar platforms to perform the role effectively
* Training can be provided for suitable applicants
