Overview
The post holder will assist the Ranger team in managing country parks across North and West Kent. The primary base is Shorne Woods Country Park, Gravesend, but work will also be required at other sites, including Manor Park Country Park, Lullingstone Country Park, Trosley Country Park, Teston Bridge Country Park, Preston Hill and Dryhill.
Responsibilities
The role supports the Ranger Services Manager and ranger team in the practical management of sites to preserve and enhance access, recreation and wildlife conservation. This includes supporting the delivery of a biodiversity enhancement project at Shorne Woods Country Park and wider site‑based work across the area.
Key duties include:
* Practical countryside management activities such as coppicing, control of invasive species, tree planting, fencing, access works and general site maintenance
* Operating and maintaining machinery and equipment, assisting contractors, and supporting volunteer activities
Requirements
Applicants should hold relevant certificates of competency, or be willing to train, in areas such as chainsaw use, brushcutting, tractor driving and herbicide use, along with other practical skills as required.
Applicants should have knowledge or experience of countryside management as a volunteer or paid worker, with an understanding of nature conservation, public access and working with visitors. Good interpersonal skills, reliability and a positive approach to customer care are essential.
The role requires the ability to travel between sites at short notice and to drive site vehicles. A full UK driving licence is required, although the Council is committed to making reasonable adjustments so that the job may still be considered if you are unable to drive due to a disability.
The Council has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.
