Job Description
The University of Strathclyde is seeking a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) to play a key role in supporting safe, compliant and effective teaching and research across the University. As a member of the Safety, Wellbeing and Resilience (SWR) Team, you will lead the coordination of radiation protection arrangements for both ionising and non-ionising radiation. Working closely with stakeholders, you will provide expert advice, develop and maintain policy and guidance, and help foster a positive and proportionate safety culture within a diverse and research-intensive environment.
Radiation protection is the primary specialist focus of this role. You will act as the University’s Radiation Protection Officer, overseeing compliance with relevant legislation and guidance, managing relationships with external regulators and the appointed Radiation Protection Adviser, and supporting departments in the safe use of ionising and non-ionising radiation sources. You will also contribute to the wider health and safety function of the Directorate by providing competent general health and safety advice and supporting performance monitoring activities.
The role offers a high degree of autonomy and influence, with responsibility for coordinating radiation emergency preparedness and response, maintaining environmental permits and registrations, and ensuring that the University’s radiation protection framework remains effective, up to date and aligned with best practice.
Educated to degree level, or with equivalent relevant experience, you will have a strong applied understanding of radiation protection principles gained through practical experience in a relevant setting. You will be an effective communicator, comfortable engaging with staff at all levels, and able to balance regulatory requirements with the needs of teaching and research. If you do not already hold formal radiation protection or health and safety qualifications, the University will support you in working towards these as part of your professional development.
This is an excellent opportunity for a radiation protection professional or health and safety adviser with a strong interest in radiation safety to develop their career within a supportive, collaborative and values-driven institution.
