Job description

Casual opportunity.

Who we’re looking for

Are you passionate about teaching life-saving skills to adults in your community? Do you have the confidence and empathy to deliver engaging, practical First Aid courses in welcoming, inclusive environments?

We’re looking for an experienced and reliable First Aid tutor to join our dynamic Adult & Community Learning team. You will deliver short courses that help adults build confidence, gain essential knowledge, and take steps towards work, volunteering, or further learning.

This role is ideal for a qualified First Aid instructor/trainer/tutor, or similar - someone who understands how to work flexibly and sensitively with adults from a wide range of backgrounds—especially those who are overcoming personal barriers or returning to learning after a long break.

The work is on a casual basis with flexible hours across the academic year. We are unable to confirm the number of hours per week. This is paid at an hourly rate.

About the role

This is more than just a teaching job. You’ll be helping adults gain life-saving knowledge while building their self-belief and sense of achievement. You will:

1. Deliver short First Aid courses (for example, Emergency First Aid at Work and basic community First Aid) in community venues across Bristol
2. Tailor lessons to meet learner needs, using accessible, trauma-informed approaches
3. Embed inclusive practice, digital tools and good safeguarding awareness into your teaching
4. Promote progression—supporting learners to take further steps in learning, volunteering or employment
5. Set clear expectations, model practical skills, and create a safe space for learners to ask questions and practice
6. Work closely with development workers, support staff and partner organisations

About the learners

Our learners are adults who may:

7. Have few or no formal qualifications
8. Be returning to learning after a long break
9. Have faced mental health challenges, trauma, addiction, or displacement
10. Speak English as an additional language
11. Need a welcoming space to build confidence and community

What you’ll need

We welcome people from all backgrounds, especially if you bring lived experience or insight into the challenges our learners face. You’ll need:

12. A recognised teaching qualification (minimum Level 3, such as PTLLS/AET) or be willing to complete one as soon as possible.
13. A recognised First Aid instructor qualification (e.g., Level 3 Award in Education and Training + First Aid at Work instructor certification)
14. Experience of delivering First Aid training to adults, ideally in community or outreach settings
15. Confidence using digital tools and systems for teaching and communication
16. Strong classroom management and communication skills
17. A calm, positive and inclusive approach to working with people
18. Awareness of trauma-informed practice, safeguarding, equality and health & safety

Why work with us?

At Bristol City Council, we believe learning should be welcoming, life-changing and accessible to all. Our Adult & Community Learning team was recently graded Good by Ofsted, with Outstanding for Behaviour and Attitudes.

We offer:

19. A supportive and inclusive working environment
20. Ongoing tutor CPD and peer support
21. Opportunities to work across diverse community venues and learner groups
22. A chance to make a real difference to people’s lives

If you're excited by the idea of making First Aid education more inclusive and accessible in Bristol, we’d love to hear from you.

Please note that this role is subject to an Enhanced DBS Check.
