Join to apply for the Bridges and Structures Inspector role at Dorset Council
What’s in it for you? You will be joining the Bridges and Structures Team at Dorset Council and helping to maintain Dorset Highways' bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other structures.
The team delivers maintenance projects and new structures from inception to construction, with regular inspections forming the foundation. As a key member, you will inspect, monitor, and report on the condition of structures to help prioritize maintenance or replacement needs.
You will play an important role in ensuring Dorset's bridges and structures are safe and fit for purpose, enabling safe travel and supporting the local economy.
We encourage hybrid and flexible working to support a healthy work-life balance.
What will you be doing? You will undertake inspections of road bridges, footbridges, culverts, retaining walls, and vehicle restraint systems. Your inspections will be the first step in maintenance or replacement decisions.
You will be the eyes and ears of the Bridge Team in the field. Most work will be outdoors, requiring travel, for which a Dorset Council van will be provided.
One day a week, you will work from the office or home, reviewing reports and planning routes. You will meet with engineers via Microsoft Teams to discuss findings and prioritize work.
You will work closely with another inspector on larger structures and independently on smaller ones. Some structures may require working at height, in confined spaces, or during evenings/night for traffic management.
About You Prior knowledge of bridges or construction techniques is advantageous but not essential; training and mentoring will be provided. You will undertake a Bridge Inspector training course and work towards an accredited qualification under the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS).
You should be observant, detail-oriented, and comfortable working outdoors, often alone, in water, at height, or in confined spaces. Physical fitness is necessary due to remote and challenging locations.
You must communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and be confident interacting with the public and private property owners.
Further Information This is a full-time role (37 hours/week) with significant travel required. A full driving license and suitable vehicle are essential.
