SCHOOL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN – BIOLOGY SPECIALISM

The Glasgow Academy Biology Department is looking for a Science Technician with an energy and enthusiasm for biology, who is excited about working in a school and wants to play a key role in supporting the safe preparation of experiments across S1 to S6 in our state-of-the-art laboratories. This role is being offered on a full time, permanent basis.
You will have an interest in science and be someone who can work collaboratively and positively within the team. You must have good organisational skills, be adaptable to the changing demands of a dynamic school environment, show attention to detail and the ability to work to deadlines by prioritising your own workload.
The successful candidate will aid the biology teaching staff in relation to the following:
1. Ensure science laboratories and prep rooms are maintained to comply with Health and Safety requirements and safety checks as detailed in relevant check lists.
2. Be aware and regularly update on Health and Safety regulations to check that Risk Assessments are carried out.
3. Be aware of the School Health and Safety Policy and the implementation of the Science Department Safety Policy.
4. Preparation, maintenance and safe storage of apparatus both for demonstration and practical work in the courses taken in the school or department.
5. Restocking and ordering of equipment and chemicals and administration of biology budget.
6. Assisting AH Biology students with their AH Biology Projects, ensuring that correct and safe procedures are used.
7. Assist with the preparation of materials for the Anatomy Society, Conservation & Wildlife Society and CREST award.
8. Support the Saturday school with the preparation of materials required for National 5 assignments.
9. Support with academic ecological trips such as our AH biology trip to Mugdock and Conservation and Wildlife Society trips.
Previous experience as a School Science Technician is not essential, but you will need a good, basic background knowledge of Biology with Nat 5/GCSE Maths, English, Science or equivalent qualifications at grade C or above.
Desirable experience and qualifications:
10. School/ University laboratory experience
11. Biology related degree/ Higher level biology qualification HNC/ HND
12. Microsoft proficient
13. Lab Logger proficient
14. Safety in microbiology level 3
15. Microscope use and repair.
