About The Role
Join Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution team and help deliver critical infrastructure that powers communities across the region. We’re looking for a Project Engineer (Cabling) (often known as Site Agent or Site Manager) to play a key role in the successful delivery of major energy projects.
In DNO North, we install and maintain EHV underground cabling systems (generally 33 kV to 132 kV) for clients such as Northern Powergrid, National Grid, and industrial clients. Projects are situated across Northumberland, the North East, Yorkshire, and North Lincolnshire.
Responsibilities
* Work on site to deliver EHV Cabling projects (33 kV – 132 kV) and lead a multi‑skilled team of Civil Operatives, Jointers, and Subcontractors.
* Lead and attend project reviews / meetings.
* Interact with governance and management systems such as Digital Briefcase and Site Assist.
* Maintain accurate project records (progress, daily diaries, etc.).
* Prepare internal/external reports and liaise with stakeholders.
* Help ensure reports provide relevant information to enable informed, cost‑effective decisions.
* Support scope and package assignment coordination.
* Specify, understand, develop, and implement technical information and drawings into delivery.
* Understand and specify plant and equipment requirements.
* Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm and keep up to date with changes in legislation.
* Ensure safety and welfare of the public, employees, and supply chain.
* Carry out Safety & Environmental tours, promote safety initiatives.
* Conduct and support Accident/Incident investigations.
* Monitor effectiveness of the H&S Management System and implement improvement solutions.
* Write and review RAMS and review/accept subcontractor RAMS.
* Identify, raise, and report risks and hazards.
* Ensure sufficiency and competency of the workforce.
* Understand, control, and issue safety documentation.
* Complete audits.
* Set people to work.
* Manage subcontractors, including monitoring contractor attendance and progress, provide direct instruction and support as necessary.
* Ensure procurement plans align with project plans and that material/resources/supply chain activities meet deadlines.
* Ensure expenditure is in line with the budget and resources are used efficiently.
* Identify elements for cost recovery from others.
* Incorporate and balance operational and commercial constraints into decision making.
* Analyse, appraise, and implement Compensation Events / Variations / Scope Changes with the Commercial Team.
* Own the budget.
* Understand the contract and its commercial impact.
* Manage commercial change at the project level.
Qualifications & Experience
* Experienced Project Engineer with knowledge of working on projects and proficiency in commercial and project management communications.
* Experience in the same or a similar industry (ideally with excavation and cable installation methods).
* Capable of effectively managing a multidisciplinary team.
* Experience implementing safe systems of work.
* Experience managing risks and change processes through a solutions‑based approach.
* Good interpersonal skills enabling development of working relationships at all levels and negotiating influence.
* Ability to discuss ideas and plans competently and confidently.
* Communicates new concepts and ideas to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Awareness and promotion of the benefits of diversity and inclusion.

* Proficient in O365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
* Possess or aspire toward a formal qualification in construction/engineering or equivalent industry experience.
* Possess or aspiration toward APM PFQ/PMQ.
* Hold CSCS and SMSTS or equivalent.
