Job Description:
This position reports to the Business Unit Manager for Food Testing in Linlithgow. The role is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of the Food Testing Laboratory.
This is a one-year fixed-term contract, working full time 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 09:30 - 18:00.
1. Manage the team, including recruitment, rotas, leave, sickness, training, development, mentoring, motivation, and disciplinary matters.
2. Maintain staff skills training matrix, ensuring it is always up to date.
3. Check transfer of data related to samples and results, and issue test reports, maintaining confidentiality.
4. Work closely with customers to translate their requirements into laboratory procedures.
5. Ensure compliance with Laboratory Quality Manual policies, procedures, and associated documents.
6. Handle complaints and investigations promptly and to a high standard.
7. Promote a culture of continuous improvement to enhance laboratory performance.
8. Ensure work is completed within client requirements and agreed timeframes.
9. Ensure staff are trained, and training documents are maintained, including ongoing competency assessments.
10. Maintain, calibrate, and service equipment to ensure safety and standard compliance.
11. Maintain laboratory facilities and environment, liaising with facilities and stakeholders as needed.
12. Complete and manage complaints and non-conformance reports (NCWs) as per KPIs.
13. Conduct internal audits according to the audit schedule and participate in external audits.
14. Control costs within budget, focusing on consumables and labor.
15. Support projects and prepare capital investment proposals annually.
16. Use KPIs to monitor and improve laboratory productivity and performance.
17. Manage waste to minimize environmental impact.
18. Ensure safety standards are met, including risk assessments and safe systems of work (SSOW).
19. Ensure all laboratory work complies with documented procedures, including proper sample handling and record keeping.
20. Manage projects, ensuring they meet time, budget, and quality constraints, and keep stakeholders informed.
21. Coordinate with Stock Controller to ensure adequate stock levels and source supplies during emergencies.
22. Ensure staff safety through appropriate training and workspace maintenance, complying with COSHH requirements.
23. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, empowering staff and maintaining a progressive laboratory environment.
Qualifications:
1. Degree or equivalent in Microbiology or Biological Science.
2. In-depth technical knowledge of food testing laboratory activities.
3. Knowledge of UKAS and ISO methods.
4. Previous supervisory or managerial experience in a busy laboratory.
5. Competence in IT, including LIMS, spreadsheets, and databases.
6. Experience working with internal and external customers.
7. Proven ability to meet and exceed targets.
8. Strong leadership and performance management skills.
9. Customer-focused with a passion for safety.
