The Role
As a Night Fitter / HGV Maintenance Technician, you will play a vital role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and availability of a busy fleet of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). Working a dedicated night shift, you’ll be responsible for both planned maintenance and reactive repairs, ensuring vehicles are fully operational and ready for use each day.
This is a hands-on, autonomous role where you’ll be trusted to manage your workload effectively with minimal supervision. Reporting to the Night Shift Foreman, you will contribute to the smooth running of the workshop while maintaining high standards at all times.
The role covers a broad range of responsibilities including preventative maintenance, safety inspections, fault diagnosis, and mechanical and electrical repairs across a variety of HGV vehicles. From routine servicing and brake work through to more complex diagnostics, no two shifts will be the same.
You will play a key role in identifying potential issues early, reducing vehicle downtime and preventing costly breakdowns. Attention to detail is essential, as all work must meet strict DVSA, safety, and compliance standards, supported by accurate documentation and job records.
This position is ideally suited to an experienced HGV Technician who enjoys working nights, values a consistent shift pattern, and takes pride in delivering high-quality workmanship in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out servicing, maintenance, and repairs on HGV vehicles
Diagnose faults and perform efficient repairs
Ensure all work complies with legal, safety, and company standards
Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately
Work independently and manage workload effectively during night shifts
Working Hours
Full-time, permanent night shift role
Tuesday to Friday
Approx. 6:00pm – 6:00am (12-hour shifts)
Consistent schedule with long weekends
Salary & Benefits
£19 – £23 per hour (depending on experience)
Equivalent to £50,000 – £60,000 per year
22.5 days annual leave
Bank holidays falling on your working days must be taken as holiday
Example: If Christmas falls on a Wednesday/Thursday, these days will be deducted from your entitlement
Requirements
Level 3 NVQ in HGV / Vehicle Maintenance – essential
Proven experience working on HGVs
Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills
Ability to work independently on night shifts
HGV Class 1 (C+E) licence – desirable but not essential
