An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivatedOccupational Therapist in our Childrens Social Care Team.
You will be part of a busy, supportive multi-skilledteam of Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, SocialWorkers and Family Support Practitioners.
You will use your effective analytical and communication skills to undertake occupational therapy practice whether this be by telephone, remotely or face-to-face, building your professional expertise in minor and major adaptations, compensatory techniques, equipment provision, moving and handling assessments, and housing needs assessments, with the aim of supporting our children to live as independently as possible in the community.
Part of your community-based role requires you to carry out lone home visits within Swindon to childrens homes, supported living homes and residential care settings. It is crucial that you can demonstrate initiative and work autonomously, and you will need the ability to work flexibly under pressure to both self-determined and prescribed deadlines. A hybrid-working pattern would be expected, accommodating a combination of remote/home working as well as on-site.
You must be fluent in the English language, as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act for the effective performance of a customer-facing role.
The ability to travel throughout the Borough will be required and access to a car.
Main duties of the job
To provide a high quality and an effective Paediatric Occupational Therapy service, to include various community settings across Health, Education and Social Services.
To manage a varied caseload of children aged 0 -16 years of age, which could include Head Injury, Cerebral Palsy, Spina bifida, developmental co-ordination difficulties, sensory and fine motor difficulties, Autism spectrum disorders.
To work as part of the multidisciplinary team in delivering therapeutic programmes.
The post requires good communication with an extensive network of Education, Health and Social Services professionals and the voluntary sector.
As part of the multidisciplinary team, it will be important to recognise the individual roles of the other team members and work in partnership with them.

* To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.
* To undertake a comprehensive assessment of children including those with diverse or complex presentations‑multi‑pathologies. Use clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition.
* To set appropriate therapeutic goals based on accurate prognosis for children, to monitor outcomes, evaluate patient progress and adjust treatment required to ensure effective management of their condition.
* To formulate and develop individually tailored occupational therapy treatment programmes based on knowledge of evidence‑based practice and sound clinical reasoning and treatment skills.
* To ensure the therapy programme complements the child's needs/care plans/curriculum across home and school.
* To gain valid, informed consent from mother or person with parental responsibility and or the child prior to treatment commencing or changing, ensuring full comprehension of the occupational therapy intervention.
* To show awareness of those patients who may lack capacity to consent, seeking advice as required.
* To liaise with Health, Social Services and Education professionals on the needs of the children as described in the local Information Sharing policy.
* To communicate effectively with the Child and Family and all those involved with the child's care using advice and support and through the provision of information to parents/carers.
* To provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information where there are barriers to understanding with either the child or family, e.g. deaf, blind, psychological problems, learning difficulties.
* To attend clinics, case conferences and annual reviews as appropriate, in liaison with a Band 7 Occupational Therapist.
* To undertake supervised outreach work in patients homes and various community locations.
* Facilitating generalisation of treatment gains through the setting up of effective support and follow‑up for children and parents in their own community and school.
* To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload, including work as a lone practitioner, assessing all risks in the patients home with support from senior staff.
* To work within a framework of local, national, College of Occupational Therapy, COT, and National Association of Paediatric Occupational Therapists delivered standards for Children's services, evaluating quality of practice.
* To maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records in accordance with COT standards of practice and local guidelines.
* To ensure that patient reports are completed and distributed to the relevant members of the multidisciplinary team.
To supervise, advise and support carers‑parents, education staff.
