Lead Commissioning Engineer
You will be working closely with the controls project manager to develop and provide control system functions for retrofit projects. These projects can range in value up to a few million pounds and need an experienced controls engineer to take the reins and ensure the engineering is completed on time and to spec.
You’ll be working on roles across Northern Europe and will likely enjoy the rush of working on multiple smaller projects vs one large one at a time.
What You’ll Be Handling
* Understand design requirements and undertake mathematical analysis to produce concept designs for materials handling machines, in collaboration with Sales, LTS, Realisation and System Integration Management Teams.
* Work with systems and hardware design teams to produce functional electro‑mechanical layouts and electrical panels, introducing new technologies where needed.
* Carry out SYEC and HWEC work; training will be provided.
* Define and agree interface points and requirements with Warehouse Management System teams.
* Develop software concepts and PLC/HMI code using primarily Siemens Step 7 and Siemens TIA Portal.
* Emulate and test PLC code where required.
* Develop interface requirements for WCS systems, HMIs and SCADA.
* Test, evaluate and perfect the PLC software and produce documentation and design guides for commissioning teams.
* Maintain revision control across PLC code libraries and document all changes.
* Work as part of the commissioning team on retrofit projects to ensure knowledge transfer and issue resolution.
* Promote and steer company standards and ensure best practice in design.
* Maintain good housekeeping skills, revision control and as‑built documentation.
* Possibly undertake certain elements of system and hardware engineering and minor project management duties as needed; training will be provided.
Requirements
* Ability to design/develop PLC code, ideally using Siemens S7 (300/400) and TIA software, including complex applications and bespoke interfaces.
* Translate customer/TGW requirements into detailed design documentation.
* Extensive experience of commissioning and testing in an engineering/industrial environment.
* Detailed understanding of control system hardware, networks, fieldbus and industrial drives.
Desired
* Knowledge of functional safety programming.
* Background in Material Handling/Conveyor industry or similar.
