Job Overview
The Environment Agency is recruiting a fixed‑term Senior Advisor – Energy & Combustion (up to 2 years) to provide expert support and leadership on the regulation of energy sectors.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert technical support, guidance and training.
* Develop strategy and tools for regulating combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.
* Commission and manage external research projects.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, trade associations and industry partners.
* Respond to incidents and provide business continuity support.
Qualifications & Experience
* Experience working in or regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration or industrial refineries.
* Technical and regulatory knowledge with control measures for emissions to air.
* Ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
* Strong relationship‑building skills with regulators, trade bodies, academia and government.
* Evidence of teamwork and collaborative project delivery.
* Ability to communicate complex regulatory advice clearly.
* Experience in developing and delivering training or guidance documents is desirable.
Competency Questions
Applicants will be asked to provide written responses to the following:
* Describe two combustion installations you have worked on and explain how their environmental impacts and regulatory requirements differ.
* Give an example of a time when you worked as part of a team to deliver a portfolio of work and how you aligned priorities.
* Provide an example of working with different types of stakeholders and how you adapted your approach.
