Overview

Solicitor qualification required for this role.

Contract: Full-time, permanent

Who we are

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the country’s largest Citizens Advice organisations delivering advice and advocacy services to tens of thousands of people every year. We deliver services by phone, digitally and face to face, in multiple locations and to some of Sheffield’s most vulnerable communities. We work to influence local and national policy and are committed to increasing the opportunities for those who use or need our services to help shape what we deliver. We are also a Law Centre giving people, who would otherwise have no access to it, specialist legal advice across a number of areas including Housing.

The opportunity

We are seeking an SRA-regulated Graduate Solicitor to join our Housing team and contribute to our legal aid contract. You will work on complex housing casework, including defending possession and eviction proceedings, serious disrepair claims, homelessness, and housing issues related to domestic abuse, violence and anti-social behaviour. You will develop as a specialist housing practitioner and take on a leadership role within the team, in a supportive environment that combines strategic casework with community impact. Though experience within housing law is desirable, it is not necessary and all relevant training will be provided.

What we offer

We offer a collaborative culture in a mission-driven charity setting and an attractive employment package, including a 35-hour working week, a pension scheme with 4% employer contribution, a health plan with integrated employee assistance programme, and access to an on-site gym. We support your professional development and will fund the cost of applying for or renewing your practising certificate where needed.

About you

You will be SRA regulated and hold, or be eligible to apply for, a current practising certificate. You will have completed the LPC or SQE and demonstrate a strong commitment to legal aid, social welfare law and strategic casework that advances access to justice. You will be a clear, compassionate communicator who can manage a demanding caseload while working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

* Provide legal advice, casework and representation in housing matters, including court advocacy where appropriate.
* Manage a varied caseload from initial interview through to resolution, including legal research, drafting, negotiation and advocacy.
* Maintain high-quality file management and comply with SRA, Legal Aid Agency and organisational quality standards.
* Work closely with caseworkers, volunteers and partner agencies to deliver holistic support to clients.
* Contribute to service development, learning and the wider aims of the organisation, including policy and campaigns.

Qualifications

* SRA regulated and qualified; practising certificate held or eligibility to apply.
* LPC or SQE completed.
* Strong legal drafting, research and analytical skills.
* Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, trauma-informed practice and client-centred service delivery.
* Ability to work under pressure, prioritise effectively and meet deadlines.
* Experience within legal aid housing practice and/or litigation.
* Demonstrable experience or training in housing law or social welfare law.
* Experience working in a charity, law centre, or community advice environment.
* Familiarity with Citizens Advice quality frameworks and Legal Aid Agency requirements.
* Experience of managing staff and volunteers.
