Overview
Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Scottish Toxoplasma and Lyme Disease and Tick-borne infections Reference Laboratories (STRL and SLDTRL) at NHS Highland. The reference laboratories deliver two high quality microbiological reference services and provide testing for patients from throughout Scotland as well as clinical and technical advice. We work closely with Health Protection Scotland to provide epidemiological information. The reference laboratories are within the Microbiology department at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, which offers a comprehensive Microbiology service to clinicians in the NHS Highland area.
We require an HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist for the Reference Laboratories in NHS Highland, in compliance with agreed specifications to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of a high quality service as assessed by internal and external review.
Responsibilities (illustrative based on the role description)
The post supports the delivery of specialist microbiology services within the reference laboratories and collaboration with clinical teams to provide accurate testing and advice. The department is organized into three sections: Culture (bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, antigen detection), Molecular (bacteria and virus), and Serology (bacterial and viral serology and immunology tests). The successful candidate will contribute to the high quality provision of these services in an ISO 15189 accredited environment.
Qualifications and requirements
* HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist (BMS) for the Reference Laboratories in NHS Highland.
* HCPC registered with no specialist portfolio (or pending) may apply; Band 6 Annex 21 would apply, with the expectation to complete the relevant Specialist Diploma to transition to Band 6.
* A post with Annex 21 applied pays a percentage of the fully qualified rate during training: Year 1 60%, Year 2 65%, Year 3 70%, Year 4 75% of the pay band maximum. If training is not completed, duties may be reviewed.
* Experience in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory.
* Based at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness; currently no requirement to work weekends/evenings/nights, but service needs may change.
