An established and growing accountancy firm is seeking a Bookkeeper to join its Chelmsford office, supporting a diverse portfolio of SME clients. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced practice-based Bookkeeper who enjoys building strong client relationships, working collaboratively within a supportive team, and taking ownership of a varied client portfolio. The role offers a hands‑on position with a strong focus on client service, flexibility, and long‑term career development.
Role Responsibilities
* Deliver day‑to‑day bookkeeping services for a varied portfolio of SME clients, including on‑site client work where required.
* Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted point of contact.
* Record and reconcile daily financial transactions using cloud‑based accounting software, including Xero and QuickBooks.
* Maintain accurate general ledger records and complete bank and credit card reconciliations.
* Support month‑end and year‑end close processes.
* Prepare financial reports, income and expenditure statements, and supporting audit documentation.
* Process invoices, receipts, payments, and manage accounts payable and receivable.
* Assist with payroll preparation, employee expenses, and weekly/monthly supplier payments.
* Support VAT returns and basic tax compliance processes.
* Provide additional administrative and financial support to improve client operations.
Personal Requirements
* Previous bookkeeping experience within an accountancy practice.
* Strong working knowledge of Xero and QuickBooks.
* Good understanding of core bookkeeping and accounting principles.
* AAT Level 2 qualified (or equivalent), or currently studying towards this.
* Familiarity with VAT returns and basic tax requirements.
* Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
* Confident communicator with strong written and verbal skills.
* Client‑focused, proactive, and able to work independently to deadlines.
* Team‑oriented with a willingness to learn and develop professionally.
