Please note this is an independent contractor role with no salary or employee status.

We are seeking suitable individuals as Panel Members (also known as Associate Hospital Managers - AHMs) to work independently of our Trust and clinical teams, assessing and treating people detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA).

If you are organized, articulate, have broad life experiences, can work collaboratively, follow procedures, and are passionate about delivering high-quality mental health services, this rewarding role may be suitable for you.

The MHA 1983 sets procedures for reviewing detention of patients, heard by a panel of three or more AHMs. Evidence from doctors, nurses, social workers, the patient, and others is considered during hearings, which can be conducted online or in person.

The Trust presents its case for continuing detention, with the patient supported by legal representatives or advocates. After review, AHMs may discharge a patient or decide to continue detention based on the evidence.

Main duties of the job:
* Understand the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) and the MHA Code of Practice, especially the roles of managers under sections 2, 3, 37, 20, and 23. An electronic link to the Code of Practice will be provided upon appointment.
* Participate in panel hearings with other AHMs, conducted online or in person.
* Review reports on patients' mental state, social circumstances, and care plans, and interview patients, professionals, and family members during hearings.
* Assist patients in explaining their wish to be discharged from detention in a sympathetic manner.
* Make decisions to discharge or continue detention, requiring unanimous agreement of all AHMs.
* Attend relevant meetings and training sessions as required.
