Bricks seeks a lawyer to join our board of Trustees.
What difference will you make?
Bricks works with Bristol’s creative, local and social enterprise communities to programme collaborative activities and secure permanent spaces in the city for our communities to build community resilience and sustainable futures. We believe in the civic role of artists and that through collaboration we can have a strong collective voice to influence the growth of the city. Our flagship project is St Anne’s House, a creative and community hub in St Anne’s Brislington. St Annes House hosts a wide range of projects to the benefit of our local communities in St Annes and the region’s wider creative communities. Uses within the 21,000 sq ft building include creative workspaces, community, youth, arts and climate action projects, a cooperative gym, theatre making space, hirable community rooms, wellbeing and therapy rooms, community sauna, community cafe, community pottery and much more. Currently on a five year lease, we are in active negotiations with Bristol City Council to acquire the building long term and then will deliver a programme of capital developments to improve the building’s sustainability via retrofit and create a new housing project on our roof. Bricks Public Art and Creative Infrastructure Consultancy takes us across Bristol and West of England, working with developers, local authorities and local communities to write and deliver programmes of creativity funded through new developments, and to secure spaces within new developments for creative and community uses for the long term.
What are we looking for?
All legal experiences welcome. A variety of legal matters come up from contracts to lease, freehold, HR etc.
What will you be doing?
Bricks’ trustees shape and set the strategic direction of the organisation, agreeing the vision and key objectives in partnership with the CEO. The full board meets four times per year (for no more than two hours), with the option to join online or in person at St Annes House. There are five subcommittees, which bring SMT and trustees together, and trustees can elect to join any, all or none of them. These are, currently; Finance and Income (four times a year) Capital project (four times a year) Fundraising and Income (four times a year) Operations & HR (twice a year) Public Art (twice a year) We are looking for a trustee who can bring legal knowledge and insight to complement our diverse and engaged board. You might be a practising or retired solicitor, legal advisor, in-house counsel, or have equivalent legal experience in the charity, property, arts, or commercial sectors. We’ll soon be saying farewell to a valued trustee with legal expertise, and we want to continue to have that perspective in our decision-making. As our legal trustee, your input will help us Review and shape major contracts – including our lease with Bristol City Council and other capital or consultancy agreements. Oversee governance matters – such as changes to our charitable objects or dealings with the Charity Commission. Support with legal aspects of employment, tenancy and freelancer contracts. Offer a legal lens on strategic or operational questions. You won’t be expected to offer full legal advice or be our only legal resource. Rather, you will help the board and CEO understand our legal position, and help manage relationships with external legal advisers as needed. We also value your wider experiences and encourage you to bring your full self to the role – not just your professional expertise. We are flexible in how trustees contribute and appreciate that people have busy lives – we may appoint more than one person to share this role.
