Job overview

We are seeking a compassionate, proactive and caring Band 6 Paediatric Emergency Department Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse, to be part of our experienced and established Paediatric Emergency team.

The post holder will play an essential role in the patient's journey, between assessment in the Emergency Department and ongoing care and interventions through to the Children's Assessment Areas and Ward.

As an experienced Children's Nurse, the post holder will be based in the Emergency Department and will co-ordinate care of sick children between the Emergency Department and Paediatric areas, ensuring effective communication is always maintained.

You will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs in the Emergency Department, commence treatment plans and be instrumental in navigating medical reviews of patients, liaising with the Paediatric areas and ensuring safe transfers of patients.

The post holder will act as a role model, promoting quality, evidence based practice, developing the Nursing Team in both the Emergency Department and Paediatric areas, by ensuring effective management of the patient.

Main duties of the job

1. Delivering high quality patient centred care in a timely manner, triaging patients and assessing the priority of their clinical presentation
2. Regularly be Nurse in Charge of the Department for full length of shift, requiring attendance at wider trust meetings/events
3. Providing emergency care and treatment to patients requiring resuscitation
4. To work alongside the wider team to always ensure efficient patient flow
5. To work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
6. To be professionally accountable for all actions during working shift
7. To be aware of and engage fully with own training and developmental needs within the clinical environment
8. To supervise newly qualified nurses/junior nurses, student nurses and healthcare assistant nurses in the giving of patient care
9. To be fully aware and comply with Trust policies and procedure

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

17. Registered Children’s Nurse (Level 1 or 2)
18. Evidence of continued professional development and implementation in clinical practice within the last 12 months

Desirable criteria

19. Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
20. Understanding of training needs in relation job role

Experience and Knowledge Required

Essential criteria

21. At least 3 years at Band 5
22. Previous experience/insight working with children in ED
23. Working with a wide range of professionals
24. Safeguarding children policies and procedures
25. Insight into clinical speciality
26. Insight into current issues in children’s nursing/ professional issues
27. Safeguarding children policies and procedures
