The Great Western Hospital is pleased to offer Stroke Medicine Consultants the opportunity to join the existing team.
Whether you are looking to start your career as a Consultant in a supportive, caring Stroke Service, or you are an existing Consultant seeking a new, exciting change, we are a close‑knit team focused on delivering the best care. We welcome applicants with experience in Stroke Medicine from general internal medicine, stroke, or neurology backgrounds.
The successful candidate will work closely with the existing team of Consultants to contribute to and improve our stroke pathways and SSNAP performance, ensuring a first‑class service where patients and their relatives come first.
The Stroke/Neurology team is based in the Betjeman Centre, on the ground floor of GWH. It houses outpatient clinic rooms, a day hospital, a therapy centre, and office space for the Consultant team and their secretarial support. A rehabilitation service for Stroke, provided by SWICC, is located on the GWH site.
Main duties of the job
The duties outlined below are not definitive and may change in accordance with the needs of the service.
Clinical Duties
* Multidisciplinary team working, including regular MDT discussions with colleagues.
* Providing evidence‑based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
* Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support).
* Development of subspecialty interests that fit the Division needs and the Trust’s strategic direction.
* Teaching, examination, accreditation duties, and contribution to undergraduate, post‑graduate, and continuing medical education.
* Cover for Consultant colleagues during leave, per Trust policy.
* Participation in clinical audit and continuing medical education.
* Performing suitable duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
* Participation in an out‑of‑hours consultant rota, as detailed in the job plan.
* Managing patient care responsibilities as outlined in the role.

Job responsibilities
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
All staff in each Division are managerially accountable through the Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director. Consultants are key members, accountable for leading changes that improve the patient experience.
* Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
* Contribute to the leadership and development of services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, aligned with the Trust’s business plans.
* Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division, supporting the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
* Collaborate with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
* Assist in cost‑effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non‑pay items, within budgets.
* Operate within the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, developing clinical policies and adhering to standing orders, financial instructions, and procedures.
* Supervise junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust‑wide teaching programmes.
* Investigate and report incidents, and partake in clinical risk management.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Fully registered with the GMC.
Experience
* Clinical training/experience equivalent to UK CCT requirements.
* Expertise in all aspects of stroke medicine.
Teaching & Research
* Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Demonstrable multi‑disciplinary team leadership skills.
* Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
