Job overview
This role is part of the expansion of the Sonography team at the new Louisa Martindale building, providing obstetric and gynaecology ultrasound services across multiple sites.
Main duties of the job
* Support the Lead Sonographer in providing a professional ultrasound service.
* Undertake diagnostic obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations following departmental protocols.
* Deliver a high‑quality imaging and reporting service for University Hospitals Sussex.
* Produce written reports and maintain accurate records using CRIS, Viewpoint and PACS.
* Communicate potentially distressing diagnoses directly to patients and refer accordingly.
* Maintain high standards of patient care and medical ethics.
* Participate in CPD and audit/research activities.
* Supervise the clinical training of student sonographers and other radiology personnel.
* Mentor recently qualified sonographers.
* Collaborate with all staff including HCAs and reception staff to uphold departmental standards.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Provide a highly specialised clinical service using ultrasound equipment to image and diagnose.
* Perform and independently report on all ultrasound procedures.
* Conduct all obstetric and gynaecology ultrasound examinations.
* Diagnose pregnancy failure, fetal abnormalities, complications and stillbirth.
* Ensure skills remain current, follow Trust policies and professional codes, and maintain registration.
* Implement UHS East agreed policies and procedures.
* Source referrals from GP services, OPD, inpatient services, one‑stop gynaecology clinics and a 5‑day EPU service.
* Work predominantly unassisted; collaborate with peers, consultant radiologists and referring clinicians.
* Be prepared to work at any UHS Sussex site (Brighton, Hove, Haywards Heath).
* Operate ultrasound equipment at an appropriate skill level and qualification.
* Use independent judgement during scans and in reports, differentiating normal and pathological variants.
Person specification
* HCPC/NMC registration.
* NHS experience.
* Knowledge of current NHS obstetric policy.
* Evidence of relevant CPD.
* Current FMF registration.
* Teaching experience of all staff grades.
* General ultrasound experience.
* Working knowledge of imaging information systems.
* Knowledge of national policy and pertinent clinical guidance.
