Consultant General Surgeon – NHS Highland – Lorn & Islands Hospital, Oban
Permanent full‑time post: 10 PAs per week (2 EPAs available). Salary: £111,430 – £148,064 per annum. Flexible contract options available.
Applications are sought for a Consultant General Surgeon to work in our unique, busy rural general hospital in Oban. The hospital itself is located on the west coast of Scotland, close enough to drive to the central belt in two hours. You have the beauty of the scenic outdoors combined with the convenience of being within striking distance of the major Scottish centres and two hours from Glasgow International Airport.
“Generalism is our specialism,” and we are happy to consider any subspecialty interest provided you are ‘Emergency General Surgery’ trained. We are eager to support other training or experience you may require, making this a truly unique opportunity.
This isn’t a job for someone interested in just maintaining rural surgical services. This is about making them fit for the future.
Candidates must have GI endoscopy skills and experience on top of broad surgical experience.

The job is advertised on a 10 PA (plus 2 EPAs) basis, but applications for part‑time/flexible working will be considered.
Within this role we can offer a Global Citizens contract for a period of 3 years. The contract offers 10 weeks* (paid) each year, to be captured in your job plan and dedicated to contributing to global health work in a partner country or in Scotland. Work could be online teaching, engagement with global and national policy makers in partner countries, or strengthening or evaluating services. You will have the support of the Global Health Academy based in Edinburgh, which can identify projects for you to join overseas and assist with travel and visa arrangements for self‑directed projects. Example program countries include Malawi, Zambia and Rwanda. (*This excludes annual leave and study leave which could be added to this time.)
