Job Introduction

We are looking for a Shift Technician based at our Barnstone site in Nottingham.

This multi‑disciplined role plays a key part within the Barnstone operation, providing engineering expertise and support to the Production team.

The Shift Electrical / Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting plant performance, reliability, and safety through both electrical and mechanical maintenance activities. The role operates on a shift basis, providing out‑of‑hours engineering support to ensure continuous plant operation.

The successful candidate will work closely with Production and Maintenance teams to minimise downtime, resolve faults efficiently, and support continuous improvement of plant performance, in line with Tarmac standards, policies, and procedures.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environment

1. Demonstrate strong commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental standards at all times.
2. Ensure all work is carried out in line with safe working practices, isolation procedures and site standards.
3. Maintain a good understanding of HSE requirements specific to the Cement industry.
4. Support compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Engineering & Maintenance

5. Carry out multi‑skilled maintenance activities across electrical and mechanical disciplines.
6. Perform fault finding, diagnostics and repair on plant equipment to minimise downtime.
7. Maintain and support electrical systems including motors, starters, LV switchgear and control systems.
8. Work with Variable Speed Drives (e.g. ABB) and associated plant systems.
9. Support maintenance and operation of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
10. Undertake basic mechanical maintenance tasks where required.
11. Carry out electrical isolation procedures safely and correctly.
12. Support installation, maintenance and upgrade activities in a heavy industry environment.

Systems & Continuous Improvement

13. Utilise CMMS systems (e.g. SAP PM) for maintenance planning, reporting and task management.
14. Support root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
15. Work collaboratively to improve plant reliability, performance and efficiency.

Key Competencies (Knowledge & Technical Capability)

16. Basic PLC knowledge (Siemens S7, Allen Bradley)
17. Understanding of process control and instrumentation systems (temperature, pressure, level, weighing)
18. Knowledge of cement manufacturing processes
19. Experience with servo motors and amplifiers (e.g. SEW)
20. Experience working within heavy industrial environments
21. Familiarity with control systems and automation

Qualifications, Experience, Skills & Knowledge

Qualifications

22. Time‑served Electrical / Process Control Engineering craftsperson
23. 18th Edition Electrical Regulations
24. IOSH or equivalent Health & Safety qualification (preferred)
25. Abrasive Wheels training
26. Slinging & Rigging training

Experience

27. Multi‑skilled maintenance experience across electrical and mechanical disciplines
28. Experience in continuous or heavy industry environments
29. Experience using CMMS systems (e.g. SAP PM)
30. Experience of plant installation and maintenance
31. Exposure to fault finding in complex plant systems

Skills & Knowledge

32. Strong electrical fault‑finding capability
33. Good knowledge of motors, starters and control systems
34. Knowledge of LV switchgear and control gear systems
35. Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
36. Strong IT skills and system use capability
37. Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting ability
38. Good communication skills, both verbal and written
39. Ability to prioritise, make decisions and work under pressure

Additional Requirements

40. Mobile plant licences (e.g. Cherry Picker, Scissor Lift) – desirable
41. Flexible approach to shift working and out‑of‑hours support
42. Willingness to undertake further training and development
