Apley Farm Shop is a small historic complex of farm buildings home to a Foodhall with Deli, Butchery and onsite baked goods, Kitchen Cafe serving local and seasonal produce, indoor Playbarn, outdoor play area and Nature Trail. It is also home to a range of small local businesses within a beautiful courtyard setting.
Here at Apley Farm Shop we are passionate about delivering high quality products, and providing excellent customer service. We are looking for an experienced individual to lead our Playbarn team. Please note this position is a 12 month maternity cover role.

Playbarn staff
Ensure that all staff are appropriately trained in the operation of tills, customer service and table service, with sufficient suitably trained staff working at all times.
Planning the rota at least three weeks in advance taking account of any additional staff that may be required. Keeping day to day staff levels within budget and correct to the needs of the business, sending casual staff home or moving them to other departments when they are not required.
Keep overall staff costs within budget.
Ensure that all staff turn up for work looking neat and tidy and wearing the appropriate Apley branded clothing. Sending staff home if they are not correctly attired, suitably clean and tidy, or have excessive jewellery or makeup (as per their contract).
Always provide the highest level of Customer Service, resolving any complaints promptly and in a professional manner.
Make the Operations Manager aware of any training requirements that are identified but unable to be delivered by the Playbarn Supervisor.
Ensure holiday forms are correctly completed and authorised and to notify the Estate Office (Finance Team) and Operations Manager on the first day of any sickness absence.
Playbarn stock ordering
Responsible for all ordering of stock from suppliers, including negotiations to obtain the best prices.
Ensure that all deliveries are checked on receipt, accurately invoiced and stored correctly.
Keep the level of stock to a minimum to ensure that stock is as fresh as possible.
Ensure that any stock ordered meets the costings agreed within the current menu.
Aim to purchase stock that has local provenance or is locally sourced in preference to stock from further afield. Local is deemed to be within a 40-mile radius of Apley Farm Shop.
Aim to purchase and present stock with lower amounts of packaging and as little plastic or non-recyclable packaging as is possible, in line with the Apley Environmental ethos.
Get advance approval from the senior management team of any new product lines, menus or ranges.
Ensure that inter-departmental stock transfers are accurately checked and recorded
Playbarn stock rotation and waste minimisation
Ensure that stock is regularly checked, remains fresh and in date and is rotated, so that short dated stock is sold first.
Minimise waste by selling to customers where possible, but if not, liaising with other departments, to ensure that items, as far as possible, are used and not discarded.
Carry out stock checks as and when required by the senior management team and/or the finance department. To investigate and explain any losses or other differences.
Playbarn merchandising, look, and general cleanliness and tidiness
Display on show food items in an attractive manner, with appropriate levels and clear pricing. Designing displays to maximise upselling of products to customers.
Ensure that the Playbarn and all on and off show areas are always clean and well-presented in advance of opening each morning, and throughout the day.
Carry out daily safety checks of all play equipment, with appropriate compliance documentation.
Make certain that any spills are cleaned up as quickly as possible and that any wet or slippery floors are clearly highlighted to minimise risk to customers and staff.
Note that the Playbarn will be cleaned each evening by our external employed cleaners, however they will not clean behind the counter. Any concerns with standards of cleaning must be highlighted immediately to the Operations Manager.
Playbarn hygiene and HACCP requirements
Ensuring the highest standard of hygiene is kept in all on and off show areas at all times.
Keep up to date with knowledge and awareness of all hygiene and HACCP requirements.
Report all accidents, incidents and near misses accurately and in a timely manner to the Operations Manager.
Departmental and team communications
Attend Management and other staff meetings as and when required.
To be one of the regular onsite Duty Managers as agreed with the Operations Manager.
Communicate new products and offers to the Marketing and Events Assistant to ensure all marketing and PR potential can be maximised.
Communicate, work with, and co-operate with other departments as and when required for the better performance of the overall business.
