Offer description

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an Engineer with experience in highways, transportation, or highway-related technology, to join our small and dedicated team. You will play a vital role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of Solihull’s Urban Traffic Management & Control (UTMC), Urban Traffic Control (UTC), Variable Message Signs (VMS) and CCTV systems.

There has never been a more exciting time to join Solihull Council. With the HS2 railway set to open in 2030, the delivery of the new Local Development Plan, major Solihull town centre redevelopment, and a growing programme of cycling infrastructure schemes, the Borough is preparing for significant residential and commercial growth. This expansion will place increased demand on our highway network—and your expertise will help us meet that challenge.

This is a varied, hands‑on role where no two days are the same. Alongside overseeing the day‑to‑day operation of our UTMC services, you will contribute across the Borough to a wide range of transportation and engineering projects. Your work will include the design, planning, and installation of traffic management systems, ensuring our network remains safe, efficient, and future‑ready.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. Working closely with partners such as Transport for West Midlands, contractors, and a broad range of stakeholders, you will provide specialist technical support to achieve successful outcomes for key infrastructure and transportation projects.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

* HNC (or equivalent level 4 qualification) or above in a relevant subject, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent knowledge through significant relevant experience.
* Strong knowledge and experience in highways transportation or highway‑related technology.
* Technical and project management skills across a wide spectrum of transportation management, control, and engineering projects.
* Analytical ability with clear examples of effective decision‑making.
* Effective verbal and written (reports) communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence a wide variety of audiences and stakeholders.

In return we can offer

* A range of flexible working options including hybrid working
* Generous annual leave entitlements with the opportunity to purchase up to 10‑days additional leave per year.
* A flexitime scheme
* Access to our Employee Assistance Programme – a 24‑hour independent, free and confidential advice and support service
* Family and carer friendly policies
* Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme
* Employee benefits including staff discounts, subsidised travel passes and Cycle 2 Work Scheme

In this role you will be required to work shifts between the hours of 07:30 and 18:30, weekend working on a rota basis and occasional bank holidays.

This is an essential car user role. You will be required to travel across the borough to oversee transportation and engineering projects. Applicants must hold a valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle. Reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled applicants where required.

Whilst this post is offered on a full‑time basis, applications for part‑time working would be considered.

To apply, please click on the link below. Your application should be in your own words and reflect your own personal experiences.

If you have a specific question or require further information please contact James McNeil, Senior Engineer at jmcneil@solihull.gov.uk on 0121 704 7100, or Dean Ward, Head of Highways at dean.ward@solihull.gov.uk

Closing date: 19th April 2026

Interviews to be held week commencing 27th April 2026
